Project overview
The Principal Software Engineer serves as a hands-on technical architect across our suite of products. The Principal Engineer role is ‘vertically oriented’ and will be an instrumental decision-maker with the opportunity to face-off with the CTOs of RGR’s vendors and partners. Additionally, this position will perform code reviews, discuss implementation details and contribute to the code base on occasion. The Principal Software Engineer interfaces with a variety of external development teams and is responsible for evaluating the technical recommendations of those teams, obtaining directional buy-in from RGR leadership, and ensuring quality implementation. This role reports to the Director of Technology Strategy. Responsibilities Understand and oversee the ongoing development and growth of RGR’s technical architecture and infrastructure across the entire suite of products. Anticipate future technology requirements – engaging with senior leaders and multifunctional teams. Identify and direct the technical scoping and build out of product innovations in cooperation with internal product teams and external vendors to achieve optimal state. Serve as the technical decision-maker and coordinate with senior leaders of the curriculum team to deliver against the product roadmap. Implement and support partnerships and integrations in the education technology ecosystem to connect RGR products with other tools and services (i.e. Clever, Classlink, LMS’s). Ensure that proposed solutions and practices maintain SOC2 compliance and meet US federal and state data privacy laws (i.e. FERPA and COPPA). Support the engineering team’s agile approaches and encourage adoption of new practices and tools, constantly seeking to improve and innovate. Actively embrace, evolve, and model adoption of best software development practices, standards, patterns, documentation, and processes as defined by the team. Keep abreast of new technologies and propose adoption as appropriate. Requirements 5-7 years of progressive experience overseeing software product development, including roles involving team leadership and decision-making. Have command of a breadth of technology skills ranging from object-oriented design development, database design/development to SOA Patterns and cloud architecture. Direct experience architecting, implementing, delivering and supporting high-quality, enterprise-scale web applications using: AWS cloud infrastructure AngularJS React MySQL PHP Html5 Hands-on experience developing and optimizing system infrastructure to support High availability, scalability, performance and reliability requirements Automated unit, functional, and end-to-end regression test suites Prior leadership experience Defining and adopting best software development practices and patterns across teams Performing software design and code reviews for developers Skilled in working closely with business partners to build technology solutions that meet the needs of internal and external users. Experience building data management solutions that comply with data privacy and security regulations. Experience in Education Technology preferred.
