About the Project
We are an independent, journalist-driven online newspaper with an international focus, launching our own website. We cover three core sections: Politics, Economy, and Culture. We want a polished, professional publication in the style of The Atlantic, with a membership model similar to Public Notice.
Scope of Work
- Set up and configure the site on a suitable platform. We are open to Ghost, WordPress, or another CMS you recommend, with a short explanation of why. Performance, security, and ease of future expansion are priorities.
- Design a responsive, mobile-first layout with clear navigation between Politics, Economy, and Culture and a consistent look across the site.
- Build a homepage with featured stories, section blocks, and a latest-news feed.
- Set up a comment section under each article, with moderation tools.
- Set up tiered memberships (free and paid) with Stripe or an equivalent payment provider, including paywalled or members-only content.
- Add newsletter sign-up connected to the platform's built-in email tool or an email marketing service (e.g. Mailchimp), with CASL-compliant consent.
- Configure SEO basics: Google Search Console, sitemap, Google News compatibility, social sharing previews, and analytics.
- Set up an editor workflow with author and editor roles, drafts, scheduling, and publishing without touching code.
- Apply our branding (we supply logo, colours, fonts, and initial copy).
Deliverables
- Fully functional, tested website on our domain
- Admin and editor accounts set up for our team
- Written documentation covering publishing, memberships, newsletters, and comment moderation
- Transfer of all theme, plugin, and service licenses and accounts to our ownership
- A walk-through call (about 1 hour) with our editors
- 30 days of post-launch bug-fix support
Requirements
- Proven experience building news, magazine, or membership websites. Please include links to at least 2 live examples.
- Experience with payment integration and email marketing integrations
- Strong understanding of web performance, security, and accessibility
- Clear communication and reliable timelines
To Apply, Please Include
1. Links to live news/magazine sites you have built
2. The platform you recommend for this project and why
3. Your estimated timeline and fixed-price quote
4. Expected monthly running costs (hosting, plugins, services)
5. Whether you offer ongoing maintenance after launch, and at what rate
