Hello - My name is Neil. Can you help me establish a budget and find a freelancer?
Project Title
Visually-Rich Workbook Design & Illustration — "Ungroupthinkable" Student Workbook (for teens/students)
Category/Skills to Select
Graphic Design, Book Layout, Illustration, Adobe InDesign, Editorial Design, Publishing, Infographic Design, Character/Icon Illustration
Project Description
I'm looking for an experienced designer/illustrator to take a completed workbook manuscript and turn it into a visually rich, professionally laid-out student workbook — built for teens and students, so visuals aren't decoration here, they're core to how the content lands.
About the Project
Ungroupthinkable is a student development framework built around a "sailboat building" metaphor (Wisdom/Compass, Character/Hull, Goals/Sail, Courage/Keel, Fortitude/Bow, Humility/Stern, Rudder, Attitude/Sail). This project is just the workbook component — 8 dedicated worksheet pages, one tied to each step of the framework, where students actively fill in their own answers, reflections, and goals.
This Is a Visual-First Project
My audience is teens/students, and I want the design to actively invite engagement — not just present blank lines to fill in. Each worksheet page should feel inviting, use the sailboat metaphor visually (icons for compass, hull, sail, keel, etc.), and be laid out in a way that makes reflection feel approachable rather than like homework.
Deliverables
Custom icons/illustrations for each of the 8 sailboat-framework steps
8 fully designed, print-ready workbook pages (fillable layout: prompts, reflection space, goal-setting areas)
Print-ready PDF
Digital/interactive/fillable PDF version
Native source files (InDesign/Illustrator or equivalent)
Working Style — This One Matters to Me
I want regular voice-to-voice check-ins with whoever works on this (video or voice call, not just async messages/email). This project teaches something I care about deeply, and I want the person designing it to actually understand and feel the material — not just execute a spec sheet. Please only apply if you're comfortable with a recurring call cadence (e.g., weekly or biweekly) as part of how we work together, not just a "deliver and disappear" engagement.
Ideal Freelancer
Strong portfolio in workbook/curriculum design, illustrated nonfiction, or children's/YA educational materials — illustration skill is as important as layout skill here
Comfortable working within an existing brand system (I'll share logo, color palette, and typography) while still bringing real creative/illustrative point of view
Available for regular live calls throughout the project, not just at kickoff and delivery
Bonus: experience designing for teen/student audiences specifically (tone, visual language, engagement)
Timeline
1–2 weeks
