MSc Strategic Management Project
1. Project overview
I am completing an MSc module in Strategic Management of Projects. The module focuses on understanding an organisation's strategic context, analysing its industry and competitive environment, assessing strategic direction, and translating strategy into a practical strategic initiative.
The project consists of two linked MSc assignments based on the organisation in which I currently work. The second assignment builds directly on the first.
The broad sequence is:
Industry analysis → management consultation → strategic implications → identification of a strategic challenge → evaluation of alternatives → business case for one new strategic initiative.
The work needs to be analytical and critical rather than simply descriptive. Strategic frameworks should be used to develop an argument, not just inserted into the assignment.
3. Assignment 1 — Industry & Strategy Analysis
Objective
The first assignment requires an analysis of the industry in which I currently work and consideration of what the industry environment means for the organisation's strategy.
The assignment has three main stages.
Stage 1 — Initial industry analysis
I need to develop an initial analysis of Company X's industry and competitive environment (using an AI Tool).
The analysis should identify the most strategically important characteristics of the industry rather than simply provide a general description of MedTech.
Relevant areas may include:
Industry structure and boundaries: What industry is Company X actually competing in? Is it simply medical-device distribution, or is the relevant competitive space broader?
Customers: Swiss healthcare organisations, their needs, purchasing behaviour, procurement processes and expectations of distributors/local partners.
Suppliers/manufacturers: The importance of international manufacturers, supplier relationships, exclusivity, bargaining power and dependency.
Competition: Other distributors, manufacturers selling directly, specialist providers and alternative routes to market.
Barriers to entry: Regulation, customer relationships, specialist expertise, manufacturer relationships, reputation, service capabilities and other potential barriers.
Technology and innovation: The effect of technological change on product portfolios and customer needs.
Regulation: The importance of Swiss and relevant European medical-device requirements and how these influence industry structure.
Economics: Revenue/margin logic, scale, service requirements, cost structure and other relevant economic characteristics.
Industry change: Major trends that could change the attractiveness or structure of the industry.
The analysis should distinguish between industry-level factors and factors that are specific to Company X.
The assignment specifically requires an initial industry analysis before management consultation.
Stage 2 — Management consultation
I will personally conduct interviews/consultations with at least two experienced senior people from Company X.
These interviews are intended to test the initial industry analysis against actual management experience.
The interviews should help establish:
what the initial analysis gets right;
what it gets wrong;
what is missing;
which industry forces management considers most important;
how the industry is changing;
what these changes mean specifically for Company X;
whether academic/framework-based analysis reflects management reality.
I will conduct and record these interviews myself and will provide the genuine interview material/transcripts where appropriate.
The freelancer must not create, simulate or invent interview responses, quotations, transcripts or management evidence.
Stage 3 — Revised analysis and strategic implications
The initial industry analysis should then be revised using the management evidence.
The important part is not simply:
“Manager A agreed with the analysis.”
Instead, the assignment should critically compare theoretical/secondary analysis with practitioner experience.
For example:
Initial analysis suggests X → management evidence challenges or supports X → therefore the analysis is revised → this has Y implication for Company X's strategy.
The final section should explain what the industry analysis means for Company X's strategic logic and future direction.
"Assignment 2 — Strategic Business Case"
Assignment 2 builds directly on Assignment 1.
The purpose is to identify an important current or future strategic challenge facing Company X and develop a business case for one new strategic initiative responding to that challenge.
The selected initiative cannot already be underway.
Management interviews
For this stage, I need genuine recorded interviews with at least:
2 senior-level managers + 2 mid-level managers.
I will conduct the interviews myself.
Because Company X has a relatively flat organisational structure, exact organisational titles may not map perfectly onto conventional definitions of senior and middle management. This should be handled carefully rather than inventing hierarchy.
The interviews should help identify management perceptions of:
major strategic challenges;
future opportunities;
competitive pressures;
customer changes;
supplier/manufacturer issues;
capabilities and capability gaps;
resource constraints;
growth opportunities;
strategic priorities;
risks;
potential new initiatives.
Again, no interview content may be fabricated.
5. Selecting the strategic challenge
The eventual strategic challenge should emerge from the evidence rather than being predetermined simply because it makes an interesting assignment.
Potential themes might include, for example:
Portfolio breadth vs specialist focus: How broad should the company's technology/manufacturer portfolio become before additional breadth begins to dilute expertise?
Strategic positioning: Should the organisation position itself primarily as a product distributor or develop further towards a specialist local MedTech partner offering expertise, implementation, training and support?
Supplier strategy: Should limited resources be concentrated on fewer, deeper manufacturer relationships or spread across a broader portfolio?
Service/value-added model: Could Company X create more value beyond traditional distribution through clinical/technical expertise, training, implementation or service?
Growth and organisational capability: How can a small company pursue growth without exceeding its management, sales, technical and operational capacity?
These are possible directions only. The final challenge should be supported by industry analysis and management interviews.
6. Business-case requirements
Once the strategic challenge is defined, several alternative responses should be developed and compared.
The assignment should not jump immediately from:
Problem → preferred solution.
Instead:
Strategic challenge → alternative strategic options → evaluation → recommended new initiative.
The recommendation should explain why the chosen initiative is preferable in light of the evidence.
The business case should then consider:
Strategic rationale: Why should Company X do this?
Industry fit: How does it respond to external opportunities/threats?
Strategic fit: Does it fit the organisation's desired direction and positioning?
Resources: What financial, human, technical and organisational resources are required?
Capabilities: What capabilities already exist? Which would need to be developed or acquired?
Implementation: What would need to happen to execute it?
Risks: What could prevent successful implementation?
Mitigation: How could those risks be reduced?
Economic logic: How would the initiative ultimately create economic value for Company X?
The final output should be written as a credible strategic business case for a senior-management audience, rather than as an abstract academic essay.
