Scottish Hand-loom Garment Creation

I am commissioning a complete ócaire–class outfit that must be loom-woven by hand and entirely hand-sewn: a brown wool ionar (sleeveless jacket), an undyed linen léine (ankle-length tunic with long sleeves), a wool crios long enough to wrap four times round the waist, and a yellow wool brat (cloak).

Historical accuracy is my priority, yet I am happy with a standard that is inspired by – rather than an exact museum clone of – 5th century Scottish practice. Natural dyes appropriate to the period and social class are therefore essential.

Alongside the finished garments, I would like weekly, in-person tuition focused mainly on sewing and general garment construction. I will cover every material cost you specify and, during teaching days, pay you at the agreed training rate of £40 per hour; items produced while I am learning are classed purely as training output, so only your time is billable. You are welcome to weave and sew the commissioned garments outside those sessions. If scheduling permits, I would also appreciate a demonstration of period dyeing, but that is secondary to the core stitching instruction.

Deliverables
• Four completed garments as listed, made with hand-loomed fabric and hand stitching
• Up to one teaching day per week on site, concentrating on sewing and assembly techniques
• Simple, written guidelines summarising the stitches, pattern shapes and finishing details covered during training

Acceptance criteria
Garments must match the specified colours and proportions; seams and finishes must rely solely on hand techniques consistent with period practice; fabric handle and weave density must be suitable for everyday rural wear rather than modern costume weight; and the first training session should confirm a mutually workable timetable.
