Assignment 3 – Interview Production

Hide Assignment Information
Instructions
Goal:

Create a short, professional story using interviews that demonstrates your ability to combine lighting, audio, camera operation, composition, and editing.

This project builds directly on the skills you’ve developed in your mid-term and earlier exercises — but now, you’ll take full ownership of the creative and technical process.

What You’ll Do

Record (Production Stage):

Work individually or in small groups (2–3 students max).
Each student is responsible for their own final video.
Film an interview with at least two subjects — this could be classmates, friends, or someone who represents a story worth sharing.
Lighting & Setup:

Use studio lighting or reflectors to create a clean, professional three-point setup (key, fill, back light).
Control mixed lighting (window + artificial) for consistent colour balance.
Framing, composition and eyeline are director’s choice, but need to be justified by the story.
Record in 1080p at 24fps or 30fps.
Audio:

Use a lav microphone, shotgun on boom, or Zoom recorder (set to Stereo File Mode).
Monitor levels with wired headphones (target −6 dB peak).
Record room tone for smoother post-production.
B-Roll:

Capture relevant visuals to layer over your interview.
Example: hands working, environment, tools, or facial close-ups.
Aim for at least 5–7 usable b-roll clips per person with a mix of wide, medium, and detail shots.
Edit (Post-Production Stage)

Sync and balance dialogue and b-roll.
Use edits to tell the story as well as blend visuals and sound smoothly.
Add titles or lower thirds introducing your subject (name + short descriptor).
Include light colour correction. Transitions if the story benefits for polish.
Add background music (royalty-free or original with permission) and adjust levels for clarity.
Create a portrait version from your final landscape version
