UI/UX DESIGNER FOR HOMESCHOOL PLANNING APP — HOMESCHOOL EXPERIENCE A STRONG PLUS
Short version: I have a fully working homeschool planning app that needs a designer with a great eye to make it look polished and professional. The features are all built — I need visual refinement, not new functionality. If you have homeschooled, or have designed for parents, families, or education, you'll do this far better than someone who hasn't, and I'll prioritize your bid.
ABOUT THE APP
The app is called Tabula. It's an AI-powered planning coach for homeschool families: parents enter the curriculum they already own, plan their weeks, track each child's progress, keep attendance and portfolio records, and get personalized coaching. It's live and functioning. What it needs now is a designer to elevate the look and feel to a polished, market-ready standard.
This is a polish job, not a rebuild. Every screen works. I want it to look and feel more refined, warm, and trustworthy — without changing how anything functions.
WHY HOMESCHOOL EXPERIENCE MATTERS HERE
This app is made for homeschool parents, and that audience has a specific sensibility. The best designer for this project understands things like:
- Homeschool families span many philosophies — Classical, Charlotte Mason, faith-based, eclectic, secular — and the design should feel welcoming to all of them, not skewed to one.
- The audience is largely parents managing multiple children; the app should feel calm and capable, never cluttered or childish.
- This is a trust-sensitive community that values warmth, simplicity, and respect for the parent's authority over their children's education.
If you've homeschooled, been homeschooled, or designed for the parenting/education/family space, please say so in your proposal and point to relevant work. It's the single biggest factor in who I hire.
SCOPE OF WORK
- Visual audit of every screen with a short written summary of what you'd improve.
- Screen-by-screen polish: landing page, sign-up and onboarding, dashboard, weekly planner, student profiles, AI coach, records/transcript, portfolio, family calendar, and resource library.
- Refine the shared design system — spacing, color usage, typography, cards, and buttons — so the whole app feels cohesive.
- Improve small details: button states, transitions, empty states, loading indicators, and consistent iconography.
IMPORTANT TECHNICAL NOTE — PLEASE READ
The app is a single React file (App.jsx) styled entirely with INLINE STYLES — no CSS file, no Tailwind, no styled-components. There is a central set of design tokens (colors, fonts, shared styles) near the top of the file that changes should flow through. Fonts are Playfair Display (headings) and DM Sans (body). The app is mobile-first and also runs on tablet, inside a fixed 680px centered column.
You must either be comfortable editing inline-style React directly, OR deliver precise, implementation-ready specs I can apply. Please state which approach you'll take. If you only work in Figma with no handoff detail, this isn't a fit.
DESIGN DIRECTION
Warm, trustworthy, family-oriented, editorial — not corporate, not childish. Calm and spacious. Palette: deep navy, sage green, warm cream, with gold and terracotta accents. Fonts: Playfair Display and DM Sans. The most important message the design should carry is that this app respects the parent — it helps them carry out their plan; it never talks down to them.
WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR PROPOSAL
- Any homeschool, education, parenting, or family-focused design experience (this matters most).
- A portfolio showing polished mobile app or web UI you've designed.
- Your approach: will you edit the React file directly, or deliver specs for me to implement?
- One specific thing you'd improve about a family-planning app's design.
- A fixed-price bid with a timeline. Milestone-based pricing preferred.
BUDGET & PROCESS
Fixed price, paid in milestones. I expect this to be a focused polish engagement rather than a full rebuild. Please bid your honest number for the scope above and note how many revision rounds are included.
I'd like to start with a small paid test — polishing one screen — so we can both confirm it's a good fit before committing to the whole app. Please confirm you're open to that.
