PROJECT BRIEF: FOR FREELANCE QUOTES
Logo & Visual Identity for a Law Firm Rebrand
Posted on behalf of the client
The Project
A boutique legal practice is rebranding as a new law firm focused on growth-stage start-ups and SMBs, with a fractional general counsel offering. The founder is hiring and expects the practice to scale, so the new identity needs to read as an established, credible firm rather than a one-person practice, while staying warm and approachable rather than corporate.
We need a freelance graphic designer to create the logo and full visual identity system. A separate designer is handling the website, so this job is the brand identity itself: logo, colour, type, and the collateral listed below, built to a system the website designer can then apply consistently.
Brand Personality at a Glance
These are the client's own answers to a brand-positioning exercise: the fixed inputs for the visual direction:
Dimension
Direction
Overall feel
Light, minimal, modern, sharp, bold
Voice
Plain-spoken, comforting, empathetic, conversational
Positioning
“Big boutique”: national/ambitious, generalist with a tech/SMB lean, premium-feeling
Client relationship
Partner/guide, down-to-earth
Innovation
Innovative/disruptive, not established/heritage
Naming Status
The final firm name isn't locked in yet, it's being shortlisted and checked for trademark and domain availability separately. You won't be asked to name the firm, but please design the wordmark/lockup so it can flex to a short, modern, one- or two-word name (the client is open to adding “Legal” or “Legal Group” after the core name if that's needed to clear a trademark search).
The naming direction gives useful context for the visual tone: the brand should evoke the outcome a founder is aiming for (growth, momentum, partnership) rather than the legal obstacles in their way. The named aspirational comparison is Aspen Legal (aspenlegal.com.au), which the client wants the new brand to be mistaken for on size and credibility.
Visual Direction
Overall direction
Light, not dark: avoid heavy navy-and-gold or dark, weighty legal templates.
Minimal, not ornate: no crests, scales of justice, columns/pillars, or serif-heavy “traditional law firm” clichés.
Modern, not traditional: should sit comfortably next to a SaaS or fintech brand.
Sharp, not soft: favour angular, geometric marks over rounded shapes; keep it approachable through colour and type rather than softness.
Bold, not understated: the mark needs to hold up at small sizes (favicon, LinkedIn avatar) without relying on a tagline.
Colour & type
Avoid the default “law firm navy + gold” palette.
Use a single confident anchor colour (deep emerald, ink black, or saturated cobalt all work) paired with a warm neutral, rather than a busy multi-colour system.
A confident, modern sans-serif for the wordmark and headings: geometric or grotesque-style, not a traditional serif.
Reference points
Aspen Legal (aspenlegal.com.au): the named aspirational comparison.
Modern challenger professional-services brands more broadly (fintech, accounting-tech, advisory) are a better mood-board source than other law firms.
What to avoid
Stock scales-of-justice icons, gavels, columns, laurel wreaths, or other literal legal iconography.
Overly playful or rounded shapes: this needs to read as credible to founders and corporate clients.
Deliverables
Primary logo (wordmark) + a standalone icon/monogram that works alone (favicon, social avatar, signage)
Colour palette and type system
Letterhead and email signature template
Business card design
Signage design (office entry / reception)
Social profile assets (LinkedIn company page, avatar, banner)
PowerPoint slide template using the brand and colour palette
A short brand guidelines document covering correct use of the above, for the website designer and future hires to work from
Timeline & Budget
No fixed budget has been set yet, please quote based on the scope above and let us know your standard turnaround for a project of this size.
What to Include in Your Quote
A few examples of past logo/identity work, ideally including professional-services or B2B brands.
Proposed timeline from kickoff to final files.
Cost, broken down by the deliverables above (or as a package with revision rounds included).
How many concept directions and revision rounds are included before final sign-off.
File formats and handover format for the final logo and brand guidelines (e.g. AI/EPS/SVG/PNG, editable templates for letterhead and PowerPoint).
