GENERAL PURPOSE
The Mechanical Design Intern will support the development of the company's connected product portfolio, including trackers, badges, panic buttons, gateways, and other wireless devices. The primary focus is on mechanical design, rapid prototyping, and iterative product development—translating product and engineering requirements into practical CAD models and physical prototypes. This role is performed largely through a remote workflow, involving CAD development, 3D printing, and design revisions based on team feedback. The goal is to produce functional prototypes, enhance product form factors, and create mechanically sound designs ready for manufacturing.
MAIN JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Create and refine 3D CAD models and mechanical assemblies for connected devices, translating electrical and product specifications into practical mechanical designs.
Develop and produce 3D-printed prototypes to evaluate fit, ergonomics, assembly, and structural integrity, incorporating feedback to refine designs iteratively.
Coordinate mechanical packaging around internal components such as PCBs, batteries, antennas, sensors, and connectors, ensuring proper clearances, fastening, cable routing, and ease of assembly.
Conduct practical prototype testing to assess fit, durability, dimensional accuracy, and overall functionality, identifying issues and implementing improvements.
Maintain organized CAD files, drawings, revision history, and prototype documentation to support design development and transition to manufacturing.
Collaborate effectively with engineering and product teams by providing clear updates, documenting design changes, and addressing technical challenges during the development process.
Support the transition from prototypes to production-ready designs, assisting with documentation and communication with manufacturing partners as needed.
Engage in continuous learning and development to enhance skills in mechanical design, prototyping, and product development.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Design and modify 3D CAD models and mechanical assemblies for connected products.
Produce and manage rapid prototype iterations using 3D printing.
Incorporate team feedback into iterative design revisions.
Design around internal components, ensuring proper fit and functionality.
Evaluate prototypes for fit, tolerances, assembly, ergonomics, and structural integrity.
Maintain detailed documentation of CAD files, revisions, and prototype notes.
Communicate technical progress, challenges, and design considerations clearly within remote and onsite teams.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
Coursework or hands-on experience in CAD design, mechanical fabrication, and prototyping.
Proficiency with SolidWorks, Onshape, or comparable 3D CAD software.
Experience with 3D printing and rapid prototyping processes.
Ability to take precise measurements and translate requirements into physical designs.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently in a remote environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
SolidWorks certification or extensive hands-on experience.
Experience designing mechanical components for electromechanical systems or robotics.
Familiarity with precision measurement tools like digital calipers.
Knowledge of tolerance, fit, fastening, material selection, and design for manufacturability.
Experience collaborating with electrical, embedded, RF, or product engineering teams.
CORE COMPETENCIES
Iterative Design Thinking: Quickly incorporates feedback and test results into improved designs.
Mechanical Problem Solving: Balances packaging constraints, tolerances, durability, and usability.
Quality Ownership: Ensures fit and function through multiple prototype iterations.
Communication & Collaboration: Effectively shares progress, documents revisions, and works with cross-disciplinary teams.
OTHER INFORMATION
This position may be performed remotely. Candidates should have access to CAD software and 3D printing capabilities to develop prototypes and ship samples as needed. Periodic coordination with the engineering team will be required to review prototypes and incorporate feedback.
Pay Details $25 - $30 Per hour
Pay Range Statement:
This is the pay range the Company reasonably expects to pay for this position at the time of this posting. Compensation will be determined based on the skills, qualifications, and experience of the applicant along with the requirements of the position.
