Design review of an industrial data-acquisition system — Stage 1
Safe Instrumentación (SFI), Bogotá, Colombia, designs modular data-acquisition hardware for geotechnical and structural instrumentation installed on bridges, hydroelectric plants and pipelines, at sites up to 4,000 m above sea level.
SFI has a bench-validated four-board prototype: a main controller with cellular and sub-GHz radio, isolated RS-485 and native USB; two near-identical sensor front ends, each with its own MCU, for inclination and for a long temperature chain of up to 200 sensors on a shared bus; and a carrier board for a purchased vibrating-wire module with its own high-voltage protection chain. Part numbers are released under NDA.
SFI has consolidated that work into a detailed design document — pin-by-pin connections, five switched power domains with current limits, coordinated protection chains with part numbers, and layout rules. That document, together with the schematics, is the input to this contract.
This contract is a design review only. USD 1,000 fixed, two to three weeks.
Scope:
Review and optimise the schematics of the four boards, and close the component values and packages that SFI has left marked as open.
Verify and strengthen input protection against the stated target of IEC 61000-4-x Level 4: ESD, surge and EFT; galvanic isolation on RS-485; reverse polarity and overcurrent.
Review the power architecture: the permanent 2S LiFePO4 battery bus, the five switched domains and their current limiting, low-power modes, and the power budget per operating mode. Note: there is no dynamic source switching — the external DC input only recharges.
Assess creepage and clearance on the high-voltage sensor channels against IEC 60664-1, including the altitude correction factor for installations up to 4,000 m.
Verify that the RF module manufacturers' integration guides are respected, so the modules' pre-certification is not invalidated.
Deliver a written report justifying each finding against the specific standard or clause that supports it, plus marked-up schematics and the layout constraints Stage 2 must respect.
Not in this contract: firmware (SFI develops it), PCB layout and manufacturing files (Stage 2, contracted separately, first option to the Stage 1 supplier), and certification or laboratory testing.
SFI does not require an FCC ID or a CE technical file in the bidder's name. SFI requires an engineer who can name the standards applied and defend the decisions taken against them.
Schedule. SFI releases the input package approximately one week after this posting. Bids are evaluated during that week and the award is made when the package is ready.
How to bid. Download the attached Terms of Reference and Qualification Questionnaire and return it completed. A bid consisting only of a price will not be evaluated. Name the individual engineer who will do the work; that person must attend a 30-minute video call, camera on, where the answers will be revisited. SFI has no objection to AI-assisted drafting, but an answer the engineer cannot defend in that call is treated as not given.
SFI will reply to every bidder, including those not selected.
