About the Project
We are developing a compact, illuminated electronic piano/keyboard designed to make music learning more engaging and intuitive. We already have a functional prototype and an existing Fusion 360 CAD model and are now looking for an experienced product/mechanical designer to take the design towards a manufacturable product.
This is not a 3D modelling or rendering-only role. We need someone who understands how a physical product is designed for manufacturing, tooling, assembly and cost, and who has previously taken real products from CAD through prototype and into production.
The Role
You will review the existing design, identify mechanical and manufacturing issues, and develop a practical production architecture for the piano. You will have significant input into how the product should be manufactured rather than simply converting the current 3D-printed prototype into CAD.
Key Responsibilities
Review and improve the existing Fusion 360 model and prototype.
Redesign the piano keys into a practical modular architecture suitable for production.
Develop a manufacturable illuminated key system, including mechanical structure, translucent/transparent components, light diffusion and LED integration.
Evaluate suitable processes such as injection molding, silicone/LSR, overmolding, two-shot molding, vacuum/urethane casting, CNC, thermoforming or other appropriate methods.
Redesign the main chassis/enclosure for economical production, including structural ribs, mounting points, PCB support and removable bottom cover.
Apply DFM/DFA principles to reduce part count, tooling complexity and assembly effort.
Consider prototype, small-batch and larger-scale production and recommend processes accordingly.
Work with prototype manufacturers, molders and toolmakers when required.
Iterate the design based on prototype testing and manufacturing feedback.
What We Are Looking For
4+ years of relevant product/mechanical design experience preferred.
Strong experience with Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Creo or another professional mechanical CAD platform.
Hands-on experience designing plastic products that have actually gone into production.
Practical understanding of injection molding and other plastic manufacturing processes.
Strong DFM knowledge: draft angles, wall thickness, ribs, bosses, parting lines, tolerances, shrinkage, snap fits, inserts and tooling considerations.
Ability to balance product design, mechanical performance, manufacturability and cost.
Comfortable communicating directly with manufacturers and toolmakers.
Strongly Preferred
Consumer electronics, educational products, toys, keyboards, musical instruments or similar products.
Silicone/LSR molding, overmolding or two-shot molding.
Transparent/translucent plastics, light guides or illuminated consumer products.
Experience taking a product from prototype → tooling → pilot production → mass production.
Experience working with Indian or overseas manufacturing/tooling vendors.
What We Care About Most
We are more interested in practical product-manufacturing experience than the number of years someone has used CAD. A strong candidate should be able to look at a part and explain not only how to model it, but how it will be molded, assembled, tested and produced economically.
Portfolio Requirement
Please share 2–4 physical products you personally designed that reached production. For each, briefly mention your role, manufacturing process, material, approximate production volume if possible, and whether you were involved with tooling/mold development.
Engagement
Part-time, project-based or consulting engagement.
Initially around 10–20 hours/week, depending on project requirements.
Hyderabad preferred; remote candidates are welcome.
Possibility of continuing into tooling, prototype and manufacturing stages for the right candidate.
