Project
A patch/badge design for an over-55s touch rugby team touring Japan in October. Two name options are still in play — the designer can pitch one design applied to both, or two distinct treatments if that's easier to price.
Name option 1: Fifty-Five Reapers Name option 2: Ferocious Fifty-Fives
The team, in one line
Distinguished (in their working lives, not on the pitch) blokes over 55, long in the tooth, who like a laugh, a beer, and some rough and tumble. The badge should read as self-aware and a bit cheeky — tough imagery, but never taking itself too seriously.
Reference style
Real motorcycle club (MC) patch / "colours" aesthetic — think classic American biker club back-patches: bold flat ink, heavy outlines, embroidery-ready shapes, aged/worn linework rather than clean corporate vector art. Not cartoonish, not a mascot logo, not airbrushed fantasy art. Should look like it could genuinely be stitched onto a leather waistcoat.
Good visual touchstones to search for inspiration (not to copy): traditional biker club "reaper" and skull patches, old-school tattoo flash art, military squadron patch art, embroidered MC rockers (the curved banner text top and bottom of a circular patch).
Required elements
Skull — central, angular, weathered. Open to a reaper/hood treatment for the "Reapers" name.
Wings — spread either side of the skull, feathered, not cartoon-soft.
England flag reference — a St George's Cross, used subtly (e.g. worked into a small shield, a draped flag, or a rocker detail) rather than as a full flat flag graphic — this is a nod to nationality, not the main event.
Team name — as a top rocker (curved banner) in the traditional MC patch layout.
Bottom rocker — for a secondary line, e.g. "Touring Japan · 2026" or "Est. 2026" — designer's call on which reads best.
Optional extras to offer as add-ons
Crossed bones behind the skull
Crossed rugby balls in place of, or alongside, the bones
A barbed-wire or chain divider between the rockers and the central emblem
A small "1955" or founding-year detail, playing on the "over 55s" angle
Colour direction
Classic biker patch palette: black base, off-white/aged-cream linework, with either deep red or navy as the accent (open to the designer's judgement on which reads better against the skull/flag combo). Avoid bright or saturated colours — should feel weathered, not fresh off a printer.
Format needed
Vector source file (AI/EPS/SVG) for future resizing
High-res PNG for digital use (socials, WhatsApp group, etc.)
If going to an embroiderer: flat, limited-colour version suitable for stitching, with colour breakdown/thread reference
Tone check
If in doubt, the badge should look like it belongs on a leather jacket, not on a rugby jersey crest. A little rough around the edges is the point — the joke is a bunch of fifty-somethings adopting proper biker-gang menace for a touch rugby tour.
