Project Description

This project aims to investigate and predict the structural behavior and failure mechanisms of an adhesively bonded carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) assembly with sandwich structure (lower stiffness core) using Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

The structure consists of hollow cylindrical CFRP members connected through adhesively bonded joints. Its geometry is defined by the cylinder length, outer diameter, wall thickness, joint configuration, adhesive overlap length, and adhesive layer thickness. An existing full-scale structure serves as the reference, while a scaled-down geometry will be developed for numerical analysis.

Required Software: ANSYS

Project Scope

The project focuses on the following activities:

Structural and Geometric Analysis: Understand the original structural configuration, identify the load-bearing components, define the loading and boundary conditions, and develop a scaled-down structural geometry.

Material Properties Definition: Define the mechanical properties of the CFRP components and adhesive material, including elastic properties, strength parameters, and relevant failure characteristics.

FEA Model Development: Develop a detailed finite element model in ANSYS, including appropriate element types, material orientations, mesh configurations, loading conditions, and boundary conditions.

Contact and Cohesive Zone Modeling (CZM): Define the interactions between structural components and implement appropriate adhesive bonding models. A Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) will be considered to simulate adhesive damage initiation, damage evolution, and progressive debonding at the bonded joints.

Mesh Convergence and Numerical Sensitivity Analysis: Conduct mesh convergence studies to establish numerical reliability and evaluate the influence of modeling parameters on the predicted structural response.

Structural and Failure Analysis: Evaluate stress distribution, deformation, structural stiffness, load-bearing capacity, stress concentrations, and potential failure mechanisms, with particular emphasis on the adhesively bonded regions.

Project Objective

The ultimate goal is to develop a reliable numerical model capable of predicting the global mechanical response of the CFRP assembly and the local damage and failure behavior of its adhesive joints under defined loading conditions.

Openness to Discussion and Alternative Approaches

The methodology outlined above represents the initial project direction rather than a fixed approach. I am open to discussing alternative modeling strategies, numerical methods, material models, contact definitions, and failure criteria that may be more suitable for this particular structure.

I would also appreciate suggestions regarding potential improvements, overlooked considerations, technical challenges, or more efficient approaches to achieving the project objectives.

Although ANSYS is required, I am flexible regarding the specific modeling techniques and workflows implemented within it.

The intention is not necessarily to follow the proposed methodology exactly, but to identify the most appropriate, technically sound, and computationally efficient approach through discussion and critical evaluation.
