ESP32-Based Wearable Dementia Safety & Voice-Reminder Prototype
Project Overview
I am looking for an embedded systems / IoT developer to build a single functional prototype of a wearable device called Mitra – Wearable Guardian for Dementia Care.
This is a student innovation/competition prototype, not a commercial medical device. The priority is to create a reliable, compact and presentable working prototype at a reasonable cost.
I am specifically looking for someone experienced with ESP32, GSM/SMS, sensors, audio playback, PCB design and small wearable electronics.
---
Required Features
1. Emergency SOS
- Physical, easily accessible SOS button.
- When pressed, Mitra should send an actual SMS to a pre-configured caregiver phone number.
- SMS should contain:
- Emergency alert
- Brief message
- Pre-configured demonstration location
- Google Maps link
- Live GPS is NOT required for this prototype.
- The location can be hardcoded in the firmware.
2. Fall Detection
- Use an accelerometer/gyroscope such as MPU6050.
- Detect a possible fall based on acceleration/orientation changes.
- Trigger an appropriate caregiver alert.
3. Voice Reminders
- Mitra should have a small speaker.
- Voice reminders should be stored locally and played at scheduled times.
- Example:
«“Dadi, it’s time to take your medicine.”»
- Ideally, the caregiver should be able to record their own voice through a simple phone interface and transfer the recording to Mitra.
- Preference is real human voice recordings, not robotic TTS.
4. Connectivity
- ESP32 as the main controller.
- Wi-Fi/Bluetooth for caregiver communication.
- GSM/cellular module for independent emergency SMS.
5. Battery
- Rechargeable battery.
- Charging and battery-protection circuitry.
- Suitable for portable wearable use.
---
Proposed Hardware
The exact components can be recommended by the developer, but the expected architecture is approximately:
- ESP32 / compact ESP32 variant
- GSM/cellular module
- MPU6050 or equivalent IMU
- Physical SOS button
- Speaker + amplifier/audio module
- microSD/local audio storage
- Rechargeable Li-ion/Li-Po battery
- Charging/power-management circuit
- Status LED
- Custom PCB
- 3D-printed/custom enclosure
GPS should NOT be included in V1.
---
Physical Requirements
The final device should be a genuine wearable prototype, preferably a compact pendant/neck-worn device.
Requirements:
- No exposed breadboard in the final version
- No loose jumper wires
- Electronics enclosed securely
- Large/easy-to-find SOS button
- Speaker opening
- Charging port
- Lanyard/neck-strap attachment
- Compact and neat appearance
A custom PCB is preferred after the electronics have been tested.
---
Development Approach
I would prefer the following staged approach:
Phase 1 — Functional electronics prototype
ESP32 + GSM + SOS + fall detection + audio + battery
Phase 2 — Firmware integration and testing
Phase 3 — Custom PCB
Phase 4 — 3D-printed enclosure
Phase 5 — Final assembly and demonstration testing
This is a one-unit prototype, not mass production.
---
Deliverables
Please include:
1. Fully working assembled prototype
2. Firmware/source code
3. Custom PCB design
4. PCB Gerber/design files
5. Bill of Materials
6. 3D enclosure
7. Basic caregiver interface/prototype interface
8. Wiring/block diagram
9. Basic operating instructions
10. Final testing and demonstration
I would like ownership/access to the project source files so that the prototype can be demonstrated and further developed later.
---
Important Prototype Simplifications
To keep the project affordable and suitable for a student competition:
- No live GPS required
- Location can be hardcoded
- No AI required
- No cloud infrastructure required unless genuinely necessary
- No medical certification required
- No mass-production optimization required
- No unnecessary advanced features
The goal is a reliable, compact and impressive demonstration prototype, rather than a production-ready commercial product.
---
Budget & Proposal
Please provide a fixed-price quotation rather than only an hourly rate.
Please separately mention:
- Components
- Firmware development
- PCB design
- PCB fabrication/assembly
- Enclosure/3D printing
- Caregiver interface
- Testing
- Shipping
- Any other charges
Target budget: ₹15,000–₹25,000 for the complete prototype.
If your quotation is higher, please explain what additional work/features are responsible for the increase.
Please include in your proposal:
- Your experience with ESP32 and GSM/cellular modules
- Previous IoT/wearable projects
- PCB design experience
- Whether you can provide a physical assembled prototype
- Estimated completion time
- Total fixed cost
- Examples/photos/links of relevant previous work
Please do not submit a generic Arduino/IoT project proposal. I am specifically looking for someone capable of developing a custom wearable prototype according to the above requirements.
