I'm looking for an embedded electronics/mechatronics engineer to help design a very small wearable mechanical beating heart for the front of a men's suit.
The visual inspiration is the Schiaparelli mechanical/crystal beating heart. This is a one-off costume/fashion project rather than a medical device. There are tutorials online of people replicating it (please search on Instagram/TikTok).
I am able to design and create a mold of the heart myself but need help with the electronics/engineering side.
What I need for the heart:
- Be as small and lightweight as reasonably possible
- Be worn on the chest/lapel area of a suit
- Mechanically "beat" using a miniature 360° rotating motor and a cam/eccentric/linkage mechanism
- Have an adjustable beating rate (PREFERRED)
- Contain small LEDs or LED beads that illuminate the heart (PREFERRED)
- Allow the motor speed and LEDs to be controlled independently (PREFERRED)
- Be controllable wirelessly from my phone (OPTIONAL)
- Ideally support both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (OPTIONAL)
- Ideally use an ESP32-C3, ESP32-S3 Mini or another very small controller
- Run from a small rechargeable battery or power bank
- Be safe to wear against clothing for several hours
I would like to be able to control:
- Heart beating ON/OFF
- Heart rate / motor speed (PREFERRED)
- LEDs ON/OFF (PREFERRED)
- LED brightness (OPTIONAL)
A simple phone-accessible webpage is sufficient; I don't need a dedicated mobile app.
I need help designing the actual beating mechanism as well as the electronics.
I'm imagining something such as: 360° micro motor → eccentric/cam → linkage/membrane → heart contracts/moves, but I would like you to recommend the smallest, quietest and most reliable method where the beating is clearly visible.
I would like:
- Complete circuit diagram
- Very clear wiring diagram
- Exact bill of materials with part numbers, focusing on parts available in Melbourne, Australia or with express delivery online.
- Component dimensions
- Recommended battery
- Recommended 360° motor
- Recommended motor driver
- Recommended ESP32/control board
- Recommended LEDs (PREFERRED)
- Mechanical beating mechanism design
- Diagram/CAD showing how the motor/cam/linkage fits inside the heart

- Instructions for connecting to and controlling it from my phone
