Freelance Software & Mapping Engineer – SwarmFarm Autonomous Robots (On-Call, Remote + On-Farm)
About us
We run [farm name], a [crop/property type] operation at [location], using SwarmFarm Robotics’ autonomous farming platform (swarmfarm.com). Our robots run across the property, and we need an on-call technical specialist to keep the software, field maps and obstacle data accurate so they keep working with minimal downtime.
The role
This is a freelance, as-needed position. You’ll be our go-to person whenever software changes, field mapping updates or obstacle issues come up. Most work can be done remotely, with occasional on-farm visits.
What you’ll do
Software support: Make configuration changes, updates and adjustments to the SwarmFarm platform and connected systems whenever operations change (new paddocks, new tasks, new application settings).
Field and paddock mapping: Create and maintain accurate maps of fields, boundaries, headlands, tracks, gates and no-go zones. Update them when farm layout or cropping plans change.
Live aerial map monitoring: Check live aerial and drone map data whenever a robot stops unexpectedly. Work out why it stopped: an unmapped obstacle, a sensor issue, a boundary error or a software fault.
Obstacle mapping: If a robot has stopped at an obstacle that isn’t on the map (trees, troughs, posts, machinery, washouts, new fencing), map it so the robot can route around it and get back to work quickly.
Troubleshooting: Diagnose stoppages and errors, get robots running again, and escalate to SwarmFarm support when needed.
Record keeping: Keep a simple log of each callout: what happened, what was changed, and how long the robot was down.
Improvements: Suggest changes to maps, routes or settings that reduce stoppages and improve coverage.
What we’re looking for
Experience with autonomous vehicles, agricultural robotics, precision ag or similar systems
Strong GIS and mapping skills (QGIS, ArcGIS, shapefiles/KML, RTK GPS, field boundary data)
Experience working with drone and aerial imagery (orthomosaics, DJI Terra, Pix4D, DroneDeploy or similar)
Comfortable with software configuration, troubleshooting and remote diagnostics; scripting (Python or similar) is a plus
Experience with SwarmFarm or similar platforms highly regarded
Reliable, responsive and able to work independently
Able to respond to callouts within [X hours] during operating periods
Current driver’s licence and ability to travel to [location] when needed (preferred)
Engagement details
Type: Freelance/contract, on-call as needed
Location: Remote, with occasional on-farm visits to [location]
Hours: Varies with seasonal workload; busier during [planting/spraying/harvest season]
Rate: [$X per hour / per callout], negotiable based on experience
Start: [ASAP / date]
To apply
Send a short summary of your experience with autonomous machinery, mapping and drone data, your hourly or callout rate, your availability and typical response time, and any examples of similar work.
