Story pitch: The Bell Beneath the Banyan
When a strange silence falls over a village during its annual monsoon festival, twelve-year-old Tara discovers that the temple bell’s missing clapper has been carried into the forest by a mischievous asura. Without it, the bell cannot call the rain clouds home—and the village’s wells are beginning to dry.
With her careful cousin Neel and a talking myna who insists she once advised Indra, Tara follows an old map toward a forgotten stepwell. Their quest leads them to a choice: use a legendary weapon to defeat the asura, or discover why he took the clapper in the first place. The story draws on Indra’s connection with rain and thunder, the devas and asuras, and the idea that courage can mean listening as well as fighting.
Brief outline
- Opening: Tara helps prepare for the monsoon festival, but the temple bell rings without making a sound.
- The mystery: A myna named Kiki reveals that the bell’s clapper is missing and the rain clouds have lost their way.
- The quest: Tara and Neel follow clues through the forest to a stepwell tied to an old story about Indra and the monsoon.
- The obstacle: An asura guards the clapper. Tara expects a battle, but learns he took it because the village’s festival noise has been frightening the creatures living near the well.
- The resolution: Tara finds a way to return the clapper and make room for both the festival and the forest. The bell rings, the clouds answer, and the village celebrates with a new promise to care for the stepwell.
- Closing: Tara understands that old stories can offer more than adventure: they can help people think about how to live together.
Sample paragraph
The bell gave a little shiver above Tara’s head. She waited for its deep, round dong—the sound that usually rolled across the rooftops and made even the grumpiest buffalo lift its ears. Nothing came. A bead of rainwater slipped from the bell’s rim and landed on her nose.
“Maybe it’s shy,” said Neel.
“Bells don’t get shy,” Tara replied, though she leaned closer just in case. From the banyan tree, a myna clicked her beak. “That one does,” she announced. “It has been keeping a secret since before either of you were born.”
