Freelance Senior Frontend / UI Engineer — B2B SaaS Product & UX (React / Tailwind / Inertia)

We’re an Australian software company preparing a B2B workforce platform for launch. The build is well advanced. Architecture, backend and product direction are settled and stay with our lead developer.

What we’re looking for is someone with strong visual judgement who can take defined functionality and workflows and turn them into polished, intuitive, consistent interfaces.

This is potentially ongoing work rather than a one-off project. If the fit is right, we’d want to build a long-term working relationship.

What you’d be doing

The focus is the visual frontend and user experience. You’ll work alongside our lead developer, who retains architecture, backend and workflow definition. You take defined requirements and make the experience of using the product significantly better.

• Building and refining production frontend screens from defined requirements and workflows
• Improving visual hierarchy, layout, spacing, navigation and information presentation
• Designing and implementing reusable UI components and interaction patterns
• Helping establish and maintain a consistent design system
• Dashboards, tables, forms, workflow screens, sidebars, drawers, modals and other data-heavy interfaces
• Responsive behaviour, loading states, empty states, validation, error states and interaction feedback
• Transitions and micro-interactions where they improve the experience
• Working within the existing architecture rather than redesigning the underlying product

Consistency matters a great deal here. The platform serves three quite different user groups with different workflows, and all of them need to feel like they’re using the same product.

Our stack

• React
• TypeScript / JavaScript
• Tailwind CSS
• Inertia.js
• Laravel backend

You don’t need to be a strong Laravel developer — that stays with our lead developer — but you do need to be comfortable working inside an existing Laravel/Inertia application and integrating with functionality provided to you.

Required

• Strong React and modern frontend experience
• Proven experience building polished B2B SaaS interfaces
• Excellent visual UI judgement — typography, spacing, hierarchy, density, composition
• Strong Tailwind experience
• Experience building reusable component systems rather than one-off pages
• Experience with complex dashboards, tables, forms, filters, pipelines and workflow-heavy interfaces
• Strong responsive design skills
• Good understanding of accessibility and interaction states
• Experience translating requirements, wireframes or visual direction into production frontend code
• Ability to take an existing functional interface and substantially improve its presentation and usability without unnecessarily changing the underlying workflow
• Strong attention to detail and consistency across a large application
• Clear written English and responsive communication
• Meaningful overlap with Australian Eastern Time

We’re far more interested in someone who has built high-quality software interfaces than someone whose portfolio is mainly websites, landing pages or branding work.

Nice to have

• Advanced Figma and product design experience — components, variants, auto-layout, design systems
• Previous experience as a Design Engineer, Product UI Engineer or UI/UX-focused Frontend Developer
• Experience creating or maintaining a SaaS design system
• Experience with complex B2B platforms — CRM, ATS, HRIS, ERP, finance, healthcare, workflow or project management software
• Experience working alongside a lead developer with clearly separated responsibilities
• Experience improving an existing product visually rather than redesigning from scratch
• Charts, analytics and data visualisation
• Polished animations and micro-interactions
• Familiarity with Laravel and Inertia
• Recruitment or HR technology experience is useful but not essential

How we work

• Every task is briefed in writing with scope, constraints and a definition of done
• You take direction from our lead developer
• Steady, predictable workload rather than crisis sprints
• We pay on time, every time

Terms

• Freelance contract with the company. Not an employment arrangement.
• Confidentiality agreement and full IP assignment signed before any access to code or documentation
• No equity component
• We’ll start with a small paid trial task on a real screen — you’ll get the requirements and context, and we’ll ask you to improve the visual experience and implement it. Ongoing work beyond that depends on how the first stage goes, for both of us.

To apply

Tell us briefly:

1. Two or three B2B SaaS interfaces you’ve built — ideally data-heavy ones. Links or screenshots are more useful to us than a description.
2. How you prefer to receive work. What makes a spec easy or hard to build from?
3. Your hourly rate and realistic weekly availability.

Please don’t send a generic proposal. We read every application properly and we’ll notice.
