Purpose
The Senior Product Specialist is responsible for translating product strategy into high-quality, deliverable outcomes, while acting as a senior subject matter expert within their domain.
This role combines strong product delivery capability with deep industry expertise, ensuring that solutions are both technically robust and aligned to real-world customer needs. As a senior individual contributor, the Senior Product Specialist plays a key role in shaping backlog priorities, improving delivery practices, and supporting the development of others within the team.
Key Responsibilities
Backlog Ownership & Refinement

Own, manage, and continuously refine product backlogs, ensuring clarity, prioritisation, and alignment to product strategy

Translate strategic initiatives and discovery insights into detailed, high-quality user stories and acceptance criteria

Ensure backlog items are appropriately sized, sequenced, and ready for delivery

Delivery Planning & Execution

Lead backlog refinement and sprint planning with a high degree of autonomy and confidence

Support the team in delivering complex or high-impact initiatives, ensuring alignment to expected outcomes

Contribute to release planning and coordinate dependencies across teams where required

Team Enablement & Leadership (Non-People Management)

Act as a senior point of contact for the development team, providing clarity on complex requirements and edge cases

Proactively identify and remove blockers, improving team flow and delivery effectiveness

Support and mentor Product Specialists, sharing best practices and raising overall team capability

Quality & Acceptance

Ensure high standards of quality by rigorously validating work against acceptance criteria and Definition of Done (DoD)

Support and guide QA and UAT processes, particularly for complex or high-risk features

Champion best practices in backlog quality, acceptance criteria, and delivery standards

Stakeholder & Feedback Management

Build strong relationships with stakeholders, confidently managing expectations and navigating competing priorities

Facilitate discussions to refine requirements, challenge assumptions, and drive clarity

Communicate delivery progress, risks, and trade-offs effectively

Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement

Analyse product performance, delivery metrics, and team effectiveness to identify improvement opportunities

Proactively recommend and implement improvements to processes, tools, and ways of working

Contribute to scaling consistent product practices across teams

Domain & Industry Expertise

Act as a recognised subject matter expert (SME) within your domain, with deep understanding of industry practices, workflows, and challenges

Apply advanced domain expertise to shape solutions, influence prioritisation, and improve product design

Partner with customers and stakeholders as a trusted advisor, particularly in complex or high-value scenarios

Ensure solutions reflect industry best practice and deliver meaningful customer value

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Product Delivery & Agile Expertise

Strong experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst, or Product Specialist within an agile environment

Proven ability to manage complex backlogs and deliver high-quality outcomes

Deep understanding of agile practices and their practical application in delivery teams

Industry & Domain Expertise

Deep and demonstrable expertise within the relevant industry domain

Experience working closely with customers or within the industry in a hands-on capacity

Ability to apply domain knowledge to solve complex problems and improve product outcomes

Strong understanding of relevant regulatory, commercial, or operational considerations

Recognised as a go-to expert for domain-specific knowledge and decision-making

Collaboration & Communication

Strong communication and facilitation skills, particularly in complex or ambiguous scenarios

Ability to influence stakeholders and drive alignment without formal authority

Proven ability to work effectively across Product, Engineering, Design, and customer-facing teams

Analytical Thinking & Problem Solving

Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to handle complex scenarios

Ability to use data, insights, and experience to inform decisions and recommendations

Quality & Delivery Focus

Strong focus on quality, with experience ensuring robust acceptance criteria and delivery standards

Ability to balance delivery pace with completeness and usability

Experience improving team delivery practices and outcomes

Tools & Technical Familiarity

Strong familiarity with product and delivery tools (e.g. Jira, Azure DevOps, Confluence)

Comfortable working with technical teams and understanding system architecture, constraints, and dependencies
