US State & Local Indirect Tax Audit — One-Day Practical Training
Job Description
I am looking for an experienced U.S. State & Local Tax (SALT) professional who can provide a one-day practical training session on State & Local Indirect Tax Audits, primarily Sales Tax and Use Tax audits.
This is not an academic course. We are looking for someone who has personally worked on U.S. state/local indirect tax audits and can explain how the work is actually performed in a corporate tax environment.
The goal is to help us understand the complete audit workflow, common responsibilities, terminology, documentation, Excel/data analysis, and day-to-day expectations so that a beginner can become comfortable working with an indirect tax audit team.
Topics We Want to Learn
* U.S. State & Local Tax (SALT) fundamentals
* Sales Tax vs. Use Tax
* How a state Sales/Use Tax audit works from beginning to end
* Audit notices and Information Document Requests (IDRs)
* Gathering and organizing data requested by auditors
* Sales and purchase transaction data
* General Ledger (GL) and tax account reconciliations
* Preparing audit reconciliation/workpaper packages
* Sampling methodologies used in tax audits
* Reviewing taxable and exempt transactions
* Exemption and resale certificates
* Supporting documentation, invoices, and transaction records
* Identifying overpayments and underpayments
* Taxability research and state-specific rules
* Responding to auditor questions
* Audit adjustments and assessments
* Preparing clear Excel audit workpapers
* Working with large transaction datasets
* Excel skills commonly required for SALT audit work, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, SUMIFS, filtering, reconciliation, and data validation
* Common tax technologies/software used by indirect tax teams
* How corporate tax teams communicate with auditors and internal stakeholders
* How to manage multiple audit requests and deadlines
* Common mistakes beginners make in indirect tax audit roles
Practical Training
We would especially like the trainer to walk us through one realistic mock Sales/Use Tax audit from start to finish, including sample data and workpapers if possible.
For example:
Audit notice → data request → data extraction → reconciliation → sampling → invoice/document review → taxability analysis → auditor response → proposed adjustments → audit closure
We would also like some guidance on what a new employee should know during their first 30–90 days in a corporate State & Local Indirect Tax Audit role.
Required Experience
Please apply only if you have hands-on professional experience with U.S. State & Local Indirect Tax Audits.
Preferred backgrounds include:
* SALT / Indirect Tax Analyst or Senior Analyst
* Sales & Use Tax Auditor
* State Tax Auditor
* Indirect Tax Consultant
* Corporate State & Local Tax professional
* Big 4 or other tax consulting experience
* Experience handling Sales/Use Tax audits for large U.S. companies
Experience with tools such as Excel, Alteryx, SQL, Power BI, Vertex, Avalara, or similar tax/data technologies is a plus.
Training Format
We prefer an intensive one-day live online session, approximately 5–8 hours, with screen sharing and practical examples.
Please mention in your proposal:
1. How many years of U.S. SALT/Indirect Tax experience you have.
2. Whether you have personally handled Sales/Use Tax audits.
3. What states or types of audits you have worked on.
4. Whether you can demonstrate a realistic audit example.
5. Technologies/tools you have used.
6. Your availability for a one-day training session.
7. Your fee for the complete session.
We are happy to pay appropriately for an experienced professional who can provide practical, job-focused training rather than only theoretical tax knowledge.
Important: Please do not share any confidential information, proprietary employer materials, taxpayer data, or internal company systems during the training. Examples should use mock, anonymized, or publicly available information.
