I’m putting together a simple three-sheet workbook that lets me stay on top of my money without fiddling with complex software. Here’s exactly what I need built:
Sheet 1 – Income & Expense Log
A clear table where I can enter every transaction. I want detailed categories with their own sub-categories (for example: “Housing ▸ Rent”, “Food ▸ Groceries”, “Food ▸ Dining Out”). The layout must make it painless to sort, filter, or expand the category list later.
Sheet 2 – Monthly Expense Analysis
This pulls live data from Sheet 1 and translates it into bar charts and pie charts. I should be able to pick any month (or the whole year) and instantly see where the money went. Totals and percentage breakdowns need to update automatically when I add or edit transactions.
Sheet 3 – Budget Planner
A forward-looking planner where I set my target amounts for each category and quickly see the variance between planned and actual. Traffic-light style indicators or conditional formatting that highlights overspending would be perfect.
I’m happy with either Excel or Google Sheets as long as:
• All formulas, lookups, and chart ranges are dynamic—no manual updates required.
• Categories, sub-categories, and months can be added without breaking references.
• The file looks clean on both desktop and mobile (nothing fancy, just readable).
Hand-off is complete when I can open the workbook, type a few mock transactions, and watch the analysis and budget sheets refresh on their own.
