I need an Azure-savvy engineer to take a close look at my on-prem / Azure hybrid environment and squeeze cost and every bit of performance out of it for both local and remote users.
Current setup
•Hybrid – On-prem Hyper V virtual systems running Windows Servers, connected with Azure AVD with site to site connection. AD, DNS, GPO management etc. on prem.
1. On Prem Application: One Hosted on Hyper V virtual server (windows server 2025), it needs its drive to be mapped in user profile as a drive letter to make application work
2. AVD Application: Second Hosted on AVD host (Windows 11 multiple connections). It also needs its drive to be mapped in user profile as a drive letter to make application work. User profiles are saving centralized storage in Azure using FSLogix
App accessed by:
1. Local – Access on-prem application via LAN and Second Application in AVD over S2S connection (very slow)
2. Local work from home (same geographical location) – connects to on-prem application via Cisco VPN (Anyconnect) and Second Application in AVD over S2S connection (very slow)
3. Remote user (different geographical location) – it is opposite of above; access Second Application in AVD via Windows App and first on-prem application via S2S connection (very slow)
Goal:
1. Performance:
a. Application accessed via S2S connections are very slow
b. Locations of applications can be
i. Both on-prem, but then remote user accessing it via cisco VPN will be super slow
ii. Both moved to cloud, need VM and that will cost extra
2. Cost:
a. S2S connection have flat rate
b. Speed via S2S is very slow
c. After user profiles moved to Azure storage, monthly cost jump to double
You’ll likely lean on tools such as Azure Monitor, Network Watcher, Wireshark, PerfMon, and Group Policy Results. If you’ve engineered seamless Azure-on-prem hybrids before, especially with AVD, I’d love to see your plan.
Please note, this is in use environment as I don't have any test environment, so the changes and work need to be done online with shared screen to avoid credential sharing and also making sure no change destabilize the work environment
