I’m looking for an experienced automotive/power-electronics engineer to design a compact and reliable power interface between a motorcycle electrical system and an outdoor LED display.
Electrical requirements
Input: standard 12 V motorcycle electrical system, with normal voltage variations and automotive transients.
LED input: 12 V DC nominal.
LED acceptable input range: 10–12 V DC.
LED current: 1.4 A nominal, 4.8 A maximum.
Required output: stable and protected 12 V DC.
The design must address
Voltage regulation.
Reverse-polarity protection.
Automotive voltage spikes/transients and load dump.
Undervoltage and overvoltage protection.
Short-circuit and overcurrent protection.
Thermal protection/management.
Correct fuse and cable sizing.
Outdoor motorcycle environment, including vibration, water and dust.
I prefer the simplest reliable solution possible, using commercially available automotive components or modules where appropriate. A custom PCB should only be used if it provides a clear technical or manufacturing advantage.
The electronics will be installed in a compact IP65/IP67 enclosure and connected to the LED through a waterproof M19 2-pin connector.
Deliverables
Complete electrical design and wiring diagram/schematic.
Selection and sizing of all components.
BOM with exact manufacturer part numbers and suppliers.
Fuse and cable specifications.
PCB design/manufacturing files if a PCB is required.
Thermal and enclosure requirements.
Assembly instructions.
Prototype test and validation procedure.
Recommendation of a supplier/manufacturer capable of producing the finished unit.
The design must be ready to manufacture, not only a conceptual design.
Experience with automotive power electronics, ISO 7637-2 / ISO 16750-2 transient protection, DC-DC converters and motorcycle/vehicle electrical systems is strongly preferred.
