Job Title: Interior Designer / Architectural Designer (Multifamily & Social Housing)
Overview
Seeking a Mid-Level freelance or project based Interior Designer or Architectural Designer with a strong passion for Multifamily and Social Housing work. This role requires a unique balance of high-end design sensibilities and strict budget discipline. Because social housing projects are subsidized by NYC and New York State agencies, our design budgets are lower than market-rate developments. However, our standard remains uncompromised: we deliver exceptionally well-thought-out, high-end aesthetics within these strict financial frameworks. The ideal candidate is nimble and thrives in a rapid production environment, pivots quickly based on revision feedback, and can seamlessly shift between client-facing meetings, material sourcing, and drafting precise technical documentation.
Key Responsibilities
• Design & Execution: Develop thoughtful, elevated design concepts specifically tailored for multifamily and social housing projects.
• Material Sourcing & Procurement: Conduct both in-person and virtual sourcing. This includes shopping at the A&D or D&D buildings, visiting local showrooms/stores, and researching online.
• Value Engineering & Estimation: Order material samples, vet pricing, and find creative, budget-conscious alternatives to achieve a high-end look on a subsidized budget.
• Technical Documentation: Translate finalized designs into detailed Construction Documents (program use will be AutoCAD) and comprehensive FF&E specifications.
• Client Management: Prepare for and participate in virtual and/or in-person meetings with clients, developers, and agency stakeholders.
• Collaboration: Actively receive critique and execute quick, precise design revisions in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications & Skills
• Experience: Proven background in residential or multifamily design (previous experience or a strong interest in NYC/NY State agency-subsidized housing is highly preferred e.g. HPD, HDC, or NYCHA).
• Technical Proficiency: Advanced design presentation skills; Advanced drafting skills in CAD and a solid grasp of compiling FF&E specification packages; Sketch-up and Adobe Creative Suite; Revit is a plus
• Agility: A fast, nimble working style with the ability to manage multiple production deadlines simultaneously.
• Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the NYC design ecosystem (showrooms, A&D building, vendor networks).
