Title: Mira and the Missing Monsoon
During a blistering summer, twelve-year-old Mira discovers that the old stepwell in her grandmother’s village is connected to a forgotten current of the cosmic ocean. When its waters begin to vanish, she follows a trail of impossible clues with her cautious cousin Dev and an unusually talkative myna bird.
Their quest draws them into a story shaped by the Samudra Manthana, the churning of the Ocean of Milk by devas and asuras. With help from a young asura who has his own reasons to distrust both sides, Mira must find out what has disturbed the water’s balance—and learn that cleverness and cooperation can matter more than possessing a legendary weapon.
The tale will use familiar mythic elements such as Mount Mandara, the serpent Vasuki, and Vishnu’s Kurma avatar, while keeping the children’s adventure and its characters original. The details of the churning vary across tellings; I’ll present these as part of one recognizable version of the tradition. Samudra Manthan overview, Mahabharata reference
Outline
- Mira finds a strange shell in the village stepwell, which is almost dry despite the approaching monsoon.
- The shell whispers a warning: a hidden current that feeds the wells and rivers has stopped flowing.
- Mira, Dev, and the myna follow its clues to a threshold between their world and the cosmic ocean.
- They meet Ketu, a young asura searching for the same current, and discover that both sides have been blaming each other.
- The children learn that the current is tangled in a remnant of the ancient churning of the ocean.
- They face a series of challenges that call for listening, courage, and teamwork rather than combat.
- Mira helps devas and asuras work together to restore the flow.
- The water returns to the stepwell, and the children bring home a lesson about shared responsibility.
Sample paragraph
The stepwell had thirty-seven steps, and Mira knew every one of them. She knew which had a crack shaped like a lightning bolt, which was cool even at noon, and which squeaked when Dev tried to sneak past her. But today, from the very bottom, came a sound she had never heard before: a soft, hollow ting, like a spoon tapping the inside of a clay pot.
Mira leaned over the railing. A silver shell rested where the water should have been.
“Don’t touch it,” Dev said.
“I wasn’t going to,” Mira replied, already climbing down.
If this direction and style work for you, approve the outline and I’ll draft the full manuscript as a Word document. I can keep the story original and review it for accidental overlap, but I can’t certify it as “100% plagiarism-free” or run an external plagiarism checker unless you provide one.
