Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a 1U CubeSat – Cradle-to-Gate Carbon Footprint Analysis Using openLCA

Project Overview

I am looking for a freelancer with experience in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), environmental impact assessment, carbon-footprint calculations, and openLCA software to assist with an academic engineering project focused on the life cycle carbon footprint of a satellite.

The project involves conducting a cradle-to-gate Life Cycle Assessment of a generic 1U CubeSat with a nominal mass of 1 kg.

I will provide the available project information, component datasheets, material inventories, calculations, and other relevant inputs. The freelancer is expected to review the supplied information, identify missing data, develop the LCA model, perform the calculations, and prepare the results and documentation to the extent supported by the available information.

1. Scope of Work

The assessment must follow a cradle-to-gate system boundary.

The system boundary begins with the extraction and processing of raw materials and includes the manufacturing of satellite components and their assembly and integration into a completed satellite.

The assessment ends when the completed CubeSat leaves the manufacturing facility.

The following activities must be excluded from the assessment:

* Launch vehicle manufacturing and launch operations.
* Rocket fuel or propellant combustion.
* Satellite transportation after the manufacturing stage.
* In-orbit operations and mission lifetime activities.
* Ground-station operations.
* End-of-life disposal, deorbiting, and re-entry.

The nominal satellite mass is 1 kg, representing one complete 1U CubeSat.

2. Main Objectives

The freelancer will be expected to:

1. Develop a cradle-to-gate LCA model for the CubeSat.
2. Review and organize the supplied material and component inventory.
3. Identify the environmental impacts associated with raw-material production, component manufacturing, and satellite assembly.
4. Estimate the greenhouse-gas emissions and global-warming impact associated with the defined system boundary.
5. Identify the components, materials, and manufacturing processes that contribute most significantly to the total environmental impact.
6. Conduct contribution analysis to compare the environmental impacts of individual components and subsystems.
7. Perform sensitivity analysis where the available data support meaningful comparisons.
8. Prepare graphical results and a clear interpretation of the findings.
9. Document data sources, assumptions, limitations, and uncertainties.

3. Satellite Components

The model should incorporate the components and subsystems supported by the information I provide. These may include:

* Satellite structure and mechanical components.
* Solar panels and associated power-generation hardware.
* Battery and power distribution unit.
* Onboard computer and electronic control systems.
* Communication system and antenna.
* Printed circuit boards and electronic components.
* Wiring, connectors, and fasteners.
* Thermal-control materials.
* Other components identified in the supplied inventory.

The freelancer must use the supplied inventory as the primary source of information and must not assume that every component listed above is present in the final inventory.

4. Required LCA Methodology

The work should follow the principles of ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 for Life Cycle Assessment.

The freelancer should:

* Define the goal, scope, functional unit, and system boundary.
* Review the available life cycle inventory (LCI).
* Map the supplied materials and manufacturing activities to suitable background datasets.
* Use ecoinvent or other suitable databases where access is available.
* Select appropriate processes and document the reasons for selecting them.
* Clearly distinguish primary data, secondary data, proxy datasets, estimates, and calculated values.
* Document assumptions wherever information is incomplete.
* Avoid inventing data or presenting unsupported estimates as verified measurements.

5. Software and Tools

Preferred tools and capabilities include:

* openLCA for LCA modelling and calculations.
* ecoinvent or another suitable life cycle inventory database.
* Microsoft Excel for inventory management and calculations.
* Appropriate Life Cycle Impact Assessment methods for evaluating global-warming impacts.

The freelancer should explain which database versions, impact assessment methods, and characterization factors are used.

A global-warming indicator expressed in kg CO₂-equivalent should be reported. Additional environmental impact categories may be included if the data and project requirements support them.

6. Expected Deliverables

The freelancer should provide the following deliverables to the extent possible using the available inputs:

1. Inventory review: An organized inventory of satellite materials, components, and manufacturing activities based on the supplied information.
2. LCA methodology: A documented goal, scope, functional unit, system boundary, and modelling approach.
3. Inventory mapping: A mapping of supplied materials and processes to appropriate background datasets, including the rationale for selecting each dataset.
4. openLCA model: A working model containing the relevant flows, processes, and product system, subject to database access and software compatibility.
5. Carbon-footprint calculations: Results for the defined cradle-to-gate system, expressed in kg CO₂-equivalent per completed 1U CubeSat.
6. Subsystem contribution analysis: A breakdown of impacts by satellite component, subsystem, material, or manufacturing process where the model supports this level of detail.
7. Graphs and tables: Clear visualizations of the total impact and the principal environmental hotspots.
8. Sensitivity and uncertainty analysis: Appropriate analyses of key assumptions and proxy datasets where sufficient information is available.
9. Final technical report: A structured report describing the methodology, inventory, results, interpretation, assumptions, limitations, and conclusions.
10. Supporting files: Excel calculation sheets and available openLCA project files, database references, and exported results needed to review and reproduce the analysis.

7. Data Availability

I will provide the project information currently available, which may include:

* Satellite component and material inventories.
* Component datasheets and technical specifications.
* Available material quantities and mass information.
* Existing calculations and assumptions.
* Manufacturing and assembly information, where available.
* Relevant project documents and references.

The freelancer must review the available information before determining what additional data are required.

Where information is missing, the freelancer should identify the gap, explain its significance, and propose a defensible method for addressing it. Any proxy or estimated value must be clearly identified and justified.

The freelancer is not expected to invent unavailable information.

8. Required Qualifications

Applicants should ideally have:

* Previous experience conducting Life Cycle Assessments.
* Practical experience with openLCA.
* Familiarity with ecoinvent or comparable LCI databases.
* Knowledge of carbon-footprint calculations and environmental impact assessment.
* Experience with manufacturing-process modelling and material inventories.
* Ability to perform contribution analysis and sensitivity analysis.
* Experience preparing technical reports and presenting engineering results.

Previous experience with aerospace components, satellites, CubeSats, electronics manufacturing, or aerospace manufacturing is an advantage.

9. Application Requirements

Please include the following in your proposal:

1. A brief description of your LCA experience.
2. Your experience with openLCA and ecoinvent.
3. Examples of comparable LCA projects you have completed, where confidentiality permits.
4. Your proposed methodology for this cradle-to-gate assessment.
5. The deliverables you can complete using the information provided.
6. The additional data or database access you would require.
7. Your estimated completion time and total project cost.

Please distinguish between deliverables you can complete with the existing information and those that depend on additional data or database access.

10. Important Conditions

The assessment must remain within the defined cradle-to-gate system boundary.

The freelancer must maintain transparency in calculations, assumptions, datasets, and limitations. All results should be traceable to the underlying inventory and modelling choices.

The final work must be technically defensible, reproducible to the extent possible, and suitable for review as part of an academic engineering project.

The freelancer must not claim that the results are independently verified, certified, or fully representative of actual satellite manufacturing unless the supporting evidence justifies those claims.
