PROJECT TITLE
Build iSwop – A Buy, Sell, Swap & SmartMatch Marketplace for South Africa
Tagline: Buy it. Sell it. Swop it.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
I am looking for an experienced developer or team to build iSwop, a modern, mobile-friendly online marketplace initially targeting South Africa. Unlike conventional marketplaces, iSwop will let users buy, sell, swap items, offer an item plus cash, and discover potential trades through an intelligent matching feature called SmartMatch.
I am open to customising existing marketplace software if it provides a reliable, cost-effective foundation. Custom development may also be considered if justified. Please recommend the best approach, including its advantages, limitations, costs and scalability.
1. INITIAL CATEGORIES
Electronics and Gaming: PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo consoles, games, controllers, accessories, phones, tablets, laptops, computers, headphones, speakers and other electronics.
Fashion and Pre-Owned Clothing: men's and women's clothing, branded and pre-owned clothes, sneakers, shoes, handbags, jackets, jeans, dresses, sportswear, vintage clothing and streetwear.
The platform must allow additional categories to be added later. Both individuals and businesses should be able to list products.
2. CORE FEATURES
Buy: Browse and search listings, filter results, view photographs, prices, item condition, seller information and location, and choose delivery or collection options.
Sell: Create accounts, upload photographs, describe items and their condition, set prices, manage listings, receive offers and track transactions. Support individual and business seller profiles.
Swop: Users list items they own and what they want in exchange. Other users can propose, accept, reject or counter offers. Both parties must review and agree to the final terms before a swap is confirmed.
Swop Plus Cash: Users can offer an item plus money to balance a trade. For example, someone could offer a PS4 plus R1,500 for a PS5. Clearly show the items, cash amount and agreed terms. Cash payments must use a suitable payment provider and supported transaction process.
SmartMatch: Users specify what they have, what they want, preferred categories, location and whether they will consider adding or receiving cash. The system compares listings and preferences and notifies users of possible matches.
Example: User A has a PS4 and wants a PS5; User B has a PS5 and wants a gaming laptop; User C has a gaming laptop and wants a PS4. SmartMatch could identify a possible three-person trade chain. Initially, basic matching and swap-plus-cash opportunities are sufficient; advanced trade chains can follow later. Every participant must explicitly agree before any trade proceeds.
3. ACCOUNTS, TRUST AND SAFETY
Include secure registration and login, email and phone verification, individual and business profiles, ratings and reviews, transaction history, notifications, reporting tools and appropriate seller verification where justified.
Support clear item-condition disclosures, accurate photos, reporting suspicious listings, counterfeit-product concerns (especially branded clothing), and procedures for complaints and disputes. Keep clear transaction records and use suitable security, privacy, backup and recovery measures.
4. PAYMENTS AND DELIVERY
Support online payments for purchases and cash components of swaps. Recommend suitable South African payment providers and explain how the solution will handle marketplace commissions, refunds, cancellations and seller payouts.
A key requirement is to investigate a provider that supports a multi-vendor marketplace; an ordinary merchant account may not support payouts to multiple sellers. Any holding or release of customer funds must use a legally and operationally appropriate arrangement.
Allow delivery or collection by agreement, with delivery-cost information, courier integration and tracking where available. Advise whether courier integration belongs in the initial release or a later phase.
5. REVENUE MODEL
Potential income sources include:
- Commission on completed sales.
- Fees for completed swaps, where appropriate.
- Featured or promoted listings.
- Business-seller subscriptions.
- Optional verification services.
- Future advertising and commercial partnerships.
An illustrative sales commission could be around 5%, subject to research and testing. Rates and fees should be configurable in the admin dashboard. Recommend which revenue features belong in the first release.
6. ADMIN DASHBOARD
Administrators should be able to manage users and business accounts; review, approve, suspend or remove listings; manage categories; monitor sales and swaps; configure commissions and fees; handle reports, complaints and disputes; review payment statuses; manage promotions; view basic statistics and revenue reports; and send announcements or notifications. Include appropriate permissions and activity logs.
7. DESIGN AND TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Create a professional, modern, trustworthy website that works smoothly on mobile phones, tablets and desktop computers. A mobile-first design is preferred. Buying, selling, swapping and SmartMatch should be simple to understand and use.
The platform should be secure, reliable, fast, search-engine friendly, scalable and easy to maintain. Recommend the technology stack or marketplace solution and explain why it suits this project. If proposing existing software, identify licensing costs, limitations and customisations, and distinguish built-in features from work requiring development. If recommending custom development, explain why.
Build the website so a mobile app can be considered later without a complete rebuild. The working name is iSwop, with the tagline “Buy it. Sell it. Swop it.” The name is provisional and has not yet been confirmed as legally or commercially available.
8. SOUTH AFRICAN REQUIREMENTS
Take applicable South African requirements into account, including POPIA, consumer protection obligations where applicable and relevant electronic-commerce requirements. Identify compliance-related features and matters requiring specialist legal or payment-provider advice.
9. SUGGESTED DEVELOPMENT PHASES
Phase 1 – Planning: Review the concept, recommend architecture and services, and identify costs, risks and dependencies.
Phase 2 – MVP: Responsive website, accounts, listings, search, buying and selling, basic swap offers/counteroffers, swap-plus-cash workflow, initial SmartMatch and admin dashboard.
Phase 3 – Transactions: Payment integration, supported commission/payout workflows, delivery features and improved transaction/dispute tracking.
Phase 4 – Enhancements: Improve SmartMatch, explore multi-person trade chains, expand business tools and revenue options, and prepare for new categories and potential apps.
Phase 5 – Launch: Testing, security and performance checks, bug fixes, deployment, documentation and handover.
Please identify what is essential for launch and what should be introduced later.
10. DEVELOPER PROPOSAL
I am seeking a developer or team with experience in online marketplaces, multi-vendor platforms, e-commerce, payment integrations and/or matching systems.
Please answer:
1. What similar platforms have you built? Share relevant examples.
2. Would you use existing software or custom development, and why?
3. How would you implement swaps and swap-plus-cash?
4. How would you build the initial SmartMatch feature and potentially support multi-person trade chains later?
5. Which South African payment provider would you recommend, and how would seller payouts work?
6. Which features would you include in the MVP?
7. What is the estimated timeline and cost breakdown?
8. What hosting, licences, subscriptions, third-party fees and ongoing maintenance costs should I expect?
9. How will you handle security, backups, testing and scalability?
10. Will I receive source code, administrator access, documentation and ownership/licensing rights for the agreed deliverables?
11. What technical or commercial risks do you foresee?
Please provide a clear proposal with deliverables, milestones, estimated timeline, costs and ongoing expenses.
11. OWNERSHIP AND HANDOVER
At completion, provide the agreed source code, administrator credentials, documentation and access to relevant hosting, domain, database and third-party accounts. Clearly disclose third-party software, themes, plugins, licences, recurring charges and restrictions. Ownership and licensing must be agreed in writing. The platform should be maintainable without unnecessary dependence on the original developer.
FINAL OBJECTIVE
iSwop is intended to be more than another buy-and-sell website. It will combine buying, selling, exchanging items, swap-plus-cash deals and SmartMatch to help people discover trading opportunities they might not find themselves. I want a practical, secure foundation that can launch with essential features and grow over time.
Please submit your recommended solution, technical approach, relevant portfolio, milestones, timeline, costs and ongoing expenses.
