Project: Interactive Visual Pitch Trainer for Singing Students

I run a singing school and want a teaching tool for students who struggle to hear when they are singing out of tune.

The tool should play a full instrumental backing track and compare the student’s live singing with the intended vocal melody. Students must be able to see immediately whether they are singing too high, too low or on the correct pitch.

The student experience

I load a backing track and its matching reference melody.

The student sings into a microphone while the backing track plays.

The screen shows the target melody as a clear path or series of note zones.

A moving marker represents the student’s voice:

Below the target: “Too low—move up”, with an upward arrow.

Above the target: “Too high—move down”, with a downward arrow.

Within the target zone: “On target”, with a clear visual confirmation.

The student can see their marker move towards the target as they adjust their voice.

Colour should support the feedback, but arrows, position and words must also communicate it. The display should be simple enough for children and adult beginners without music-reading skills.

Audio requirements

Play proper MP3 or WAV backing tracks, such as purchased Karaoke Version tracks.

Accept a matching guide vocal or melody file to establish the target notes.

Allow the guide vocal to be muted while retaining its visual melody.

Keep the backing track, target melody and live microphone feedback synchronised.

Clearly indicate when no reliable vocal pitch is detected rather than displaying misleading feedback.

Explain the recommended microphone and headphone setup.

I do not expect the software to know the intended vocal melody from an instrumental backing track alone. Please explain which reference file format you recommend and how I would prepare each song.

Teaching controls

Pause, restart and loop short phrases.

Slow down playback without changing the key.

Adjust the song’s key, keeping the reference melody aligned.

Adjustable pitch tolerance for beginners and more advanced singers.

Handle natural vibrato and transitions between notes without constant distracting error messages.

First milestone: working prototype

Before developing the complete product, I want a working demonstration using one agreed song, with its backing track and reference melody.

The demonstration must show a singer deliberately singing below, above and on the target note, with clear and responsive visual feedback. A static design or animated mock-up will not satisfy this milestone.

Your experience with real-time vocal pitch detection.

Your proposed platform and supported devices.

Expected response delay and how you will test accuracy.

The cost and timeframe for the prototype, quoted separately from the complete product.

Any ongoing hosting, software or licensing costs.

Source-code ownership, handover and maintenance arrangements.

Please recommend the simplest reliable version for use in a singing studio first.
