I am moving my website over to a new, independent hosting environment that I fully own and control. I want to recreate the exact look, feel, and functionality of my current live site on the new server.
To ensure we cover everything smoothly, I’ve put together a migration checklist for you to use as a guide:
Website Migration Checklist:
Phase 1: Environment Setup
• [ ] Independent Hosting: Confirm access to the new, client-owned hosting environment.
• [ ] Staging Environment: Set up a temporary staging URL on the new server to build and test the site without disrupting the current live domain.
Phase 2: Content & Asset Replication
• [ ] Frontend Layout & Design: Replicate the exact visual layout, styling, color schemes, fonts, and responsive mobile design of the live site.
• [ ] Media Assets: Download and re-upload all images, graphics, logos, PDFs, and video files from the live site to the new media library.
• [ ] Text & Copy: Ensure all page text, blog posts, legal pages (Privacy Policy, Terms of Service), and contact information are copied accurately without typos or missing sections.
• [ ] Functionality & Plugins: Rebuild or install equivalent plugins, forms (contact forms, booking forms), navigation menus, and interactive features so they function identically.
Phase 3: SEO & URL Preservation (Critical)
• [ ] URL Structure: Match the exact URL slugs (e.g., [yourdomain.com/about-us](https://yourdomain.com/about-us)) of the original site so existing search engine rankings and bookmarks are not broken.
• [ ] Metadata: Copy all SEO meta titles, descriptions, and alt text for images over to the new site.
Phase 4: Testing & Sign-off
• [ ] Cross-Browser Testing: Test the staging site on Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and mobile devices to ensure zero broken links, missing images, or formatting bugs.
• [ ] Form Submission Test: Test all contact or intake forms to ensure notifications route correctly to your email.
• [ ] Client Approval: Present the staging link for final review before initiating the domain switch.
