# Book Cover Commission — Fractured Affinity
**Series:** Fractured Affinity
**Book One:** The Unranked Legionnaire
**Author/Pen Name:** NAUT
**Genre:** LitRPG / Progression Fantasy / Dark Fantasy Adventure
## Project Overview
I'm looking to commission a professional, original book cover for the first novel in my LitRPG progression-fantasy series, *Fractured Affinity*.
I have developed an AI-generated concept image that captures much of the composition and atmosphere I want. However, I would like a professional artist to create an original illustration with their own artistic judgment, natural brushwork, purposeful details, and a distinctive visual identity.
My priority is for the final artwork to feel **authentically hand-illustrated rather than like AI-generated fantasy art**.
## About the Story
Oscar is a seventeen-year-old who finds himself trapped in an unfamiliar world ruled by a powerful, Roman-inspired empire.
He becomes a captive, forced to wear an iron collar reinforced by magic and endure life inside a brutal arena system.
Unlike the experienced fighters around him, Oscar is physically outmatched and underprepared.
His unusual ability, Fracture Affinity, allows him to perceive structural relationships and weaknesses. However, understanding what he sees and learning how to exploit it require observation, experimentation, mistakes, and determination.
This is an underdog progression story about survival, earned strength, friendship, sacrifice, and eventually confronting the institutions controlling his life.
The protagonist isn't an invincible warrior. He is a young man desperately learning how to survive.
## Main Cover Concept
I envision an arena scene showing two fighters facing one another in a tense moment before combat.
The viewer is positioned behind or slightly to the side of Oscar, with his much more experienced opponent directly ahead of him.
The illustration should communicate an immediate imbalance in experience and equipment.
I want someone scrolling through audiobook covers to notice the artwork and immediately feel curious about the young fighter's predicament.
**The scene should feel grounded, gritty, atmospheric, and emotionally compelling rather than excessively violent or theatrical.**
## Main Character — Oscar
- Seventeen years old, visibly youthful
- Lean, wiry physique rather than heavily muscular
- Dark, somewhat untidy hair
- Worn, rough captive clothing appropriate to a Roman-inspired fantasy setting
- Heavy, functional iron collar that is physically real but magically controlled
- An oval shield with a compromised or loose grip
- A short **wooden practice sword**, not a real steel blade
- Alert, braced posture indicating determination and nervous readiness
Oscar should not look like a handsome romance-cover protagonist, an armored knight, or an experienced gladiator.
He should look young, disadvantaged, and vulnerable—but absolutely determined not to give up.
## Opponent — Brann
Brann is an experienced arena fighter and a formidable opponent.
- Older than Oscar
- Broader, stronger, and physically mature
- Weathered appearance reflecting years of experience
- Controlled, confident posture
- Practical, worn fighter's equipment
- A real spear and a broad shield
- An iron captivity collar
Brann should feel intimidating because of his experience, composure, and physical presence—not because of oversized armor or exaggerated proportions.
He is a person, not a fantasy monster or a video-game boss.
## Arena and Setting
The arena is a major institution in a Roman-inspired imperial city.
The scene should include:
- Pale, dusty arena sand
- Crowded stone spectator galleries
- Worn, functional stone architecture
- A barred entry gate
- A faint magical protective ward around or above the spectator area
- Subtle red fabric banners for atmosphere
The environment should suggest a harsh, established institution where the lives of captive fighters are treated as entertainment.
Avoid fantasy castles, enormous decorative pillars, elaborate magical effects, or architecture that looks impractical.
The protective ward should be subtle, not a bright blue science-fiction force field.
## Important Symbol
The manuscript describes a mysterious mark consisting of **a hook above three short horizontal bars**.
This symbol is important to the story and could become a recurring visual identity across the series.
I have an approved visual reference showing the shape I prefer.
The hook should look intentional and ancient, carved into stone, not like a question mark.
**Important:** The later Legion insignia consists of three horizontal bars alone. These are distinct symbols and should not be confused.
If used on the cover, I prefer the hook-and-three-bars symbol carved into a stone element above the title.
Please do not add Roman eagles, laurel wreaths, invented heraldry, or repeated symbols to the banners.
## Artistic Direction
My preferred style is traditional painted fantasy illustration with a modern professional finish.
I am particularly interested in:
- Visible, varied brushwork
- Natural imperfections and selective detail
- Rich atmospheric depth
- Weathered, believable materials
- Strong silhouette design
- Dark blue-gray shadows
- Muted ochre, bronze, rust, and weathered red accents
- Expressive body language
- Dramatic but believable lighting
I don't want photographic realism, hyper-sharpened digital textures, plastic-looking skin, or perfectly symmetrical and overly polished fantasy imagery.
I want the illustration to look like the work of an artist with a recognizable personal style.
## Typography
The cover must display:
**FRACTURED AFFINITY**
**BOOK ONE**
**THE UNRANKED LEGIONNAIRE**
**A LITRPG PROGRESSION FANTASY**
**NAUT**
The series title should have a commanding, recognizable presence, while *The Unranked Legionnaire* should remain clearly readable.
I prefer elegant, weathered serif typography rather than overly ornate metallic lettering.
The title should be readable when the cover is displayed as a small audiobook thumbnail.
The artist can explore a better overall typography arrangement if it improves the design.
## Artist Mark
I currently use a small **OA monogram**, representing Oscar Aguiniga, as a personal mark on my concept artwork.
I would like to discuss whether this should remain on the commissioned illustration or whether the artist would prefer their own unobtrusive signature.
I do not want a fake artist signature or a decorative autograph font.
## Intended Formats
The primary need is a square audiobook cover, but I would like the artwork to be adaptable for ebook and paperback editions.
Please quote the following separately if appropriate:
1. Square audiobook cover, ideally 3000 × 3000 pixels or larger at native resolution
2. Ebook front cover
3. Full paperback wrap, including front cover, spine, and back cover, for a 6 × 9-inch book (final spine dimensions will depend on the printer and paper stock)
I would like high-resolution final exports and, if possible, layered editable source files.
## Rights and Originality
I will provide an AI-generated image as a **visual reference only**, not as artwork to trace or simply paint over.
I am commissioning original human-created artwork and would like to understand the commercial usage rights, ebook and audiobook rights, print rights, portfolio credit terms, and any limitations on future editions or merchandise.
Please let me know whether any generative AI is used in your illustration workflow.
## What Matters Most
This cover needs to accomplish three things:
1. Look like distinctive, professionally commissioned fantasy illustration.
2. Accurately represent the characters, setting, and central underdog conflict.
3. Capture attention immediately, particularly at small audiobook thumbnail sizes.
I want the finished design to make potential readers curious about Oscar and the world of *Fractured Affinity*, while also establishing a recognizable visual identity for future books.
I would love to see your own creative interpretation of this concept rather than a literal recreation of my reference image.
