I am preparing a journal-ready research paper that evaluates how well modern sandbox evasion techniques succeed against VM-based analysis. The study will be hands-on: every evasion proof-of-concept will be written in Python, executed inside a purpose-built VirtualBox lab, and examined with industry-standard monitoring tools.
Scope
The manuscript must cover the full arc from background theory to experimental results. Specifically, I need:
• A concise rationale for selecting Python as the implementation language and an explanation of any libraries you will rely on.
• An in-depth discussion of three evasion families—code obfuscation, timing attacks and environment fingerprinting—paired with the countermeasures typically deployed by sandboxes.
• Design and documentation of the VirtualBox testbed, including OS image choices, hypervisor settings and any instrumentation (e.g., Procmon, Wireshark, Sysmon or similar).
• A reproducible experimental methodology: data collection workflow, metrics, and statistical approach for judging “effectiveness”.
• Analysis that links the raw observations back to theory, culminating in clear conclusions and recommendations for defenders.
• Complete manuscript structure (abstract through references) formatted to meet common computer-security journal guidelines.
Acceptance criteria
1. All code executes without modification in the supplied VirtualBox images.
2. Figures, tables and citations compile cleanly in LaTeX or Word (your choice).
3. Results are traceable: every claim in the discussion references a specific data point or log excerpt supplied in an appendix.
