We are seeking an experienced Shopify/front-end developer to develop and deploy a highly customised eCommerce marketplace.
The platform will operate as a multi-brand marketplace, with Shopify forming part of the core commerce infrastructure. A third-party marketplace solution compatible with Shopify is currently being assessed to facilitate vendor, product, inventory and order management.
While this project is primarily focused on the customer-facing front-end UI, the successful developer must be technically capable of supporting the integration between the custom front end, Shopify and the selected marketplace software. Experience with marketplace architecture, Shopify APIs and third-party commerce integrations is therefore highly desirable.
The Project
Detailed wireframes and functionality notes will be supplied.
The proposed interface is intentionally unconventional and moves significantly beyond a standard Shopify theme. The developer will need to translate the supplied wireframes into a highly accurate, responsive and commercially functional eCommerce experience, including bespoke navigation, interactions, product discovery and non-standard page layouts.
The visual execution of the UI is fundamental to the business proposition. We are therefore looking for someone equally confident in pixel-accurate front-end development and technically robust eCommerce architecture.
The developer will also be expected to identify where proposed functionality creates technical, performance, accessibility or eCommerce limitations and recommend the most appropriate solution without unnecessarily compromising the intended UX.
Technical Requirements
The completed platform must be:
* Highly customised while remaining tightly aligned with supplied wireframes and UI specifications.
* Fully responsive across desktop, tablet and mobile.
* Integrated with Shopify and capable of interfacing with the selected multi-vendor marketplace software.
* Built using clean, maintainable and well-documented code.
* Architected to accommodate future marketplace functionality, integrations and digital touchpoints.
* Fast and performance-focused, with strong Core Web Vitals.
* Securely developed using current web development and Shopify best practices.
* Designed to minimise exposure of customer data, credentials, API tokens and other sensitive information.
* Appropriately protected against common front-end and integration vulnerabilities.
* Compatible with Shopify's native security and checkout infrastructure wherever appropriate.
* Accessibility-conscious and aligned with current WCAG best practice.
* Thoroughly QA tested across browsers, devices and screen sizes prior to deployment.
Technical SEO
Technical SEO must be considered at architecture and development level from the outset, rather than applied retrospectively.
This should include:
* Semantic HTML and logical heading architecture.
* Crawlable site architecture and strategic internal linking.
* Clean and scalable URL structures.
* Canonicalisation and indexation controls.
* Comprehensive XML sitemap architecture for products, collections, editorial content and relevant marketplace pages.
* Appropriate robots.txt configuration and crawl management.
* Structured data/schema markup, including Product, Breadcrumb and Organisation data where applicable.
* Management of duplicate content and dynamically generated pages.
* SEO-conscious handling of filters, faceted navigation and URL parameters.
* Redirect management and appropriate 404 handling.
* Search-engine-accessible rendering regardless of the development architecture selected.
* Image optimisation, lazy loading, caching and efficient asset delivery.
* Compatibility with Google Search Console, Google Merchant Centre, analytics, tracking pixels and consent management.
* Strong Core Web Vitals and mobile performance.
The developer should also identify and implement any additional technical SEO requirements appropriate to a growing multi-brand marketplace.
Marketplace Integration
The marketplace management software will be selected separately; however, developer input may be required during final selection and implementation to ensure the chosen solution integrates effectively with Shopify and the custom front end.
The developer may therefore be required to collaborate with the marketplace software provider to configure APIs, webhooks, product data, inventory, vendor information, order flows or other integrations required to deliver the intended customer experience.
We are not seeking to develop proprietary marketplace infrastructure from scratch where existing software can appropriately facilitate these functions.
Future App & Digital Ecosystem
The marketplace is intended to expand beyond the initial website into a broader digital ecosystem, including a dedicated iOS/Android application and additional digital touchpoints.
The initial architecture should therefore be developed with these future requirements in mind, avoiding unnecessary technical limitations that would require the platform to be substantially rebuilt as it expands.
Developers with experience creating mobile applications connected to Shopify or designing eCommerce architecture that can support multiple customer-facing interfaces are particularly encouraged to apply.
The mobile application itself is not a mandatory deliverable within the initial scope; however, developers are welcome to provide a separate indicative estimate or recommended approach for its future development.
Ongoing Development Opportunity
There is strong potential for this project to develop into an ongoing development partnership.
Competitive proposals are encouraged, as the initial marketplace represents the first phase of a broader digital roadmap, with future plans including dedicated mobile applications, continued platform optimisation, new functionality and additional digital touchpoints.
We are particularly interested in establishing a relationship with a developer who understands the long-term vision and can continue to support the platform as it evolves, scales and introduces new functionality.
Ideal Experience
We are particularly interested in developers who can demonstrate previous experience with:
* Highly customised Shopify builds.
* Multi-brand or multi-vendor marketplaces.
* Bespoke eCommerce interfaces beyond standard Shopify themes.
* Shopify APIs and third-party software integrations.
* Complex product discovery, filtering and navigation.
* Technically sophisticated SEO architecture.
* Performance optimisation and secure development practices.
* Scalable architecture capable of supporting future mobile applications.
* Translating detailed wireframes into highly accurate production interfaces.
This is not a standard Shopify theme customisation project. The distinct customer-facing interface is central to the platform's proposition and must be executed extremely closely to the supplied creative and UX direction.
When submitting a proposal, please provide examples of comparable work, your recommended technical approach, estimated development timeframe and competitive project cost, alongside any anticipated third-party or ongoing development requirements.
We are looking for a developer who can deliver the initial platform efficiently and to a high technical standard, while ideally becoming a long-term development partner as the marketplace grows.
