Critically Analyse the Role of Supervision and Assessment in Student Nurse Practice

This assessment is designed to help you demonstrate that you are ready to transition
into the role of a Newly Qualified Nurse (NQN). At Level 6, you are expected to show that
you can think critically, make informed professional judgements, and apply evidence to
real clinical situations. This means your writing must go beyond simply describing what
happened.
A crucial point to understand is that this assignment is not a critique of your Practice
Assessor. You are not judging their performance, evaluating their competence, or
commenting on the quality of their supervision. Instead, you are analysing your own
learning experience and exploring how the supervision and assessment you received
supported your development.
It is equally important to note that you are not analysing the quality of care delivered
to the patient. This assignment is not about whether the care was “good” or “bad,” or
whether the team made the right decisions. The focus is on your experience as a
student and how supervision shaped your ability to contribute safely and effectively.
Finally, this is not a personal reflection. You are not writing about your emotions or
personal reactions. Instead, you are analysing your experience through the lens of the
NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA, 2023). These
standards provide the framework for your discussion and help you evaluate how
supervision contributed to your learning, safety, and professional growth.
