ZOOT ELLIS — ROLLING FROM THE CRATES
Poster Series Creative Brief
The concept
Rolling From The Crates is an ongoing series of all-vinyl DJ mixes by Zoot Ellis.
Each volume is represented by a different location, chosen to reflect the mood and personality of the mix, rather than necessarily where the music originates.
The underlying idea is a record collector travelling from place to place with his records:
If this mix were a place, where would it be?
I've developed the concept through the attached AI mock-ups. These are references for the visual direction rather than finished designs to reproduce literally. I'd like a designer to take the concept and turn it into a more refined, ownable visual identity.
For now I'd like to create Volume 1 — California, which will establish the master visual language for the ongoing series.
Overall look
The visual language combines vintage music/event posters, record collecting and cinematic travel imagery.
I like the analogue quality of the mock-ups: bold condensed typography, aged print/record-sleeve texture, strong colour and atmospheric environments.
The California artwork should feel warm, soulful, rolling, spacious and West Coast, with the Pacific sunset atmosphere of the reference image.
Depth is important. I particularly like the way the foreground equipment leads into the crate and then into the location beyond. It should feel like the records have genuinely been brought into that environment rather than simply placed over a travel image.
Elements that remain consistent
These form the core identity across every volume:
Small PRESENTING above the main title.
Large, dominant ZOOT ELLIS typography.
ALL VINYL / LIQUID / ROLLERS / SOULFUL DNB / JUNGLE block.
ROLLING FROM THE CRATES as the permanent footer/series title.
A plain, worn record crate that feels like the same physical crate travelling throughout the series.
Turntable, headphones and vinyl as recurring foreground objects.
A tactile, slightly distressed/analogue print aesthetic.
The composition doesn't need to be identical every time, but each poster should immediately feel like part of the same series.
Elements that change with each volume
Each location has its own scenery, atmosphere, lighting and colour palette.
There are also four recurring storytelling details:
LOCAL DRINK — where we are
A locally appropriate drink with fictional branding. California has a California pale ale.
RECORD SLEEVE — where we've been
A partially visible record on the table subtly references the previous destination through its artwork, without naming it. For Volume 1, this is a very understated nod to London, where the journey begins.
VOLUME NUMBER — which chapter we're on
The volume number is incorporated naturally into the environment — signage, neon, building details etc. — rather than being part of the standard graphic layout.
ONE MUSICAL EASTER EGG
One subtle reference to D&B/jungle/music culture hidden naturally within each scene. For California this is the WINSTONS / 126 street sign.
These should reward a second look rather than make the artwork feel like a puzzle.
The series
Future destinations currently include Jamaica, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Brazil, although the project is deliberately open-ended.
The aim is:
Same world. Same traveller. Same crate. Different stop.
Each destination should have enough individuality that the posters work beautifully together as a collection, while retaining an unmistakable Rolling From The Crates identity.
Volume 1 — California
The attached California mock-up is the primary visual reference.
I'd like to retain the overall feeling of the Pacific coast, palms, warm sunset, long perspective and record-collector foreground, while allowing room for the designer to improve the composition and execution.
The final artwork should feel professionally designed rather than like a polished AI image, particularly in the typography, environmental details, texture and integration of the foreground with the location.
Once approved, California becomes the master reference for future volumes.
Deliverables
For the finished artwork, I'd like:
Editable layered master/source file, with typography and key design elements retained as editable wherever practical.
Print-ready A2 artwork (420 × 594 mm), preferably designed at full size, 300 dpi where raster imagery is used, with appropriate bleed and CMYK output suitable for professional printing.
Print-ready PDF with fonts embedded/outlined as appropriate.
High-resolution TIFF or PNG master.
High-quality JPEG for general digital use.
Social-media exports, including a portrait version suitable for Instagram.
Ideally, the design should be structured so that the recurring elements can be efficiently carried into subsequent volumes.
Please also include any font/licensing requirements and third-party image/asset licensing necessary for me to reproduce the artwork commercially in print and online.
