CAN Bus Data Extraction & Vehicle Telematics Engineer – BS6 Trucks
We are looking for an experienced CAN Bus / Automotive Embedded Systems / Vehicle Telematics engineer who can help us extract and decode CAN bus data from BS6-compliant commercial trucks.
We currently have access to BS6 trucks and want to understand what data is available over the vehicle's CAN network, how to access it safely, and how to convert the raw CAN messages into meaningful vehicle parameters.
Project Requirements
The selected freelancer will be expected to help us with:
Identifying the available CAN bus interfaces/networks in BS6 trucks.
Determining the appropriate physical connection/interface for accessing CAN data.
Capturing raw CAN frames from the vehicle.
Identifying CAN IDs and message structures.
Decoding raw CAN data into meaningful parameters wherever possible.
Understanding CAN baud rate and communication configuration.
Identifying relevant vehicle parameters such as:
Vehicle speed
Engine RPM
Engine load
Accelerator/throttle position
Brake status
Engine temperature
Fuel level/fuel consumption
Vehicle odometer
Battery/alternator voltage
DTC/fault information
Engine status
Gear information
Wheel speed
PTO status, if available
Other available ECU/vehicle parameters
Determining whether the data follows a standard such as J1939, OBD-II, UDS, or a manufacturer-specific CAN protocol.
Providing guidance on CAN logging and analysis.
Helping us build a repeatable method for collecting CAN data from multiple trucks/models.
Important
We are specifically interested in BS6 commercial trucks, so experience with modern heavy vehicles and their CAN networks is highly desirable.
We understand that BS6 vehicles may have multiple CAN networks and that the availability and meaning of specific CAN parameters can vary depending on the truck manufacturer, model, ECU configuration, and CAN network.
The freelancer should therefore be comfortable with reverse engineering and CAN protocol analysis, rather than relying only on standard OBD-II PIDs.
Expected Deliverables
We would ideally like the freelancer to provide:
Recommended CAN interface/hardware setup.
Physical connection/wiring guidance.
CAN bus configuration, including baud rate where applicable.
Raw CAN data logging methodology.
CAN trace/log files from testing.
CAN ID/message mapping.
Decoded parameter list with:
CAN ID
Byte/bit position
Length
Scaling factor
Offset
Unit
Description
Identification of standard vs manufacturer-specific messages.
Sample software/scripts for capturing and processing CAN data.
Documentation explaining the complete setup so that our team can reproduce the process.
Preferred Technical Experience
Please apply if you have practical experience with one or more of the following:
CAN Bus
CAN FD
SAE J1939
OBD-II
UDS
Automotive Ethernet
Vehicle diagnostics
ECU communication
CAN reverse engineering
CAN decoding
Heavy commercial vehicles/trucks
Automotive telematics
Fleet management systems
Embedded automotive systems
SocketCAN
CANoe/CANalyzer
SavvyCAN
PCAN
Kvaser
Vector CAN tools
Arduino/ESP32/Raspberry Pi-based CAN interfaces
Python/C/C++ for CAN data processing
Ideal Freelancer
The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience working directly with vehicle CAN networks, preferably commercial vehicles or trucks.
Experience with Indian BS6 trucks or manufacturers operating in the Indian commercial-vehicle market would be a significant advantage.
We are looking for someone who can work practically with the vehicle and CAN logs, not just provide theoretical information.
Project Approach
Initially, we would like to work with one truck as a proof of concept.
The process would approximately be:
Truck → CAN interface → Raw CAN capture → CAN ID analysis → Message decoding → Vehicle parameters → Software/API integration
If the initial proof of concept is successful, there is potential for further work involving:
Multiple truck models
Multiple vehicle manufacturers
Automated CAN decoding
Telematics device integration
Real-time CAN data acquisition
Cloud/API integration
Fleet monitoring applications
Please Include in Your Proposal
To help us evaluate your experience, please provide:
A brief description of your CAN/automotive experience.
Examples of CAN reverse-engineering projects you have completed.
Whether you have worked with J1939 or heavy commercial vehicles.
Which CAN hardware/tools you normally use.
Whether you can physically guide us through the truck-side connection.
Examples of CAN logs or decoded CAN data you have worked with, if you can share them.
Your estimated time and cost for an initial proof of concept.
Any information you would need from us before starting.
Please mention “BS6 CAN” at the beginning of your proposal so we know you have read the complete requirement.
We are open to working with an individual freelancer or an experienced automotive/CAN engineering team.
