My 1998 Yamaha Exciter 135 will idle at the dock but refuses to move past roughly 5 mph no matter how far the throttle is advanced. After a short run the engine overheated and now won’t stay running at idle either. I need an experienced marine tech who can come out, diagnose the root cause, and fix the problem quickly so I can get back on the water.
Primary focus: carb and overall engine performance. A full diagnostic run-through of linkages, carb/fuel delivery, ignition timing, and any sensors that could be limiting RPM is essential. Once you pinpoint the issue, I’ll rely on your advice to decide whether existing components can be serviced or if replacement parts are the smarter route—I don’t yet know exactly what will be needed.
